Lewis Britton,
Giffnock, East Renfrewshire

This piece is from http://lewisbritton.com...

I’m a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours graduate of Finance at the University of Strathclyde. I achieved distinction in third year when my course was spread across Finance and Economics. Fourth year Finance study focused on asset pricing, quantitative methods, corporate investment, and corporate financing. I am currently a Masters student studying a Master of Science in Software Development.

I am developing and maintaining a sustainable and minimalist Linux system. I main a Lenovo ThinkPad T420 and burn an X220. I currently use the OS Manjaro on which I run i3-Gaps but with plans to transition to Suckless’ dwm window tiling manager. I tend to spend my days in the text editor Vim, writing and compiling documents in LaTeX/Markdown using primarily pandoc and pdflatex. This sometimes extends to Beamer-compiled slide shows. I’m also very familiar with my desktop workhorse and other machines running Windows XP and Windows 7 and, my MacBook Pro running MacOS.

My proudest achievement to date is, without doubt, my 13.5 hour, 23.94 mile, 9,162 foot expedition in The Playground. Some close seconds include: my 130k+ feet of elevation gain in both cycling and hiking, in 2021; my bicycle century in 2021; my ascent of Curved Ridge in 2021 which broke my fear of falling; and of course, this website! Some other proud moments extend to obtaining a top-100 ranking in Gotham’s Greatest in the video game Batman: Arkham Knight, across 2,500 hours of playtime in 2020; and, developing and maintaining a sustainable Linux system since 2020. So yes, obscure is probably the right word. But it’s the word which sums me up perfectly. I’m sure you’re currently struggling to decide if I’m some fat, greasy, Monster-Energy-drinking desk-jockey gamer who eats Koka Noodles and Walker’s Sensations for lunch and will never do a little cuck-and-grind for the wage. Or, if my love for a strike at an RF Legacy, a spin on RoGeR the Giant TCR Advanced 1, lacing up the 4.5k mile brekked Asics for Waterfoot and yet another ascent of Ben More, and pride in personal hygiene and grooming, have prevented a route down this slippery slope.

LandChad out.

Hi everyone, my name is Ailidh. I graduated from Strathclyde in 2017 with an LLB honours degree however I quickly discovered the legal field was not for me. For the past few years I have been working in BBC Scotland, and I am currently a Senior Resource Scheduler in the Operations dept. which I've kept up part time whilst studying. This role really solidified that I like problem solving and technical roles. It also introduced me to a variety of software and allowed me the opportunity to critique it based on my needs to complete my job on a day to day basis. This made me realise I would enjoy being part of the overall creation process of such software which is why I looked into coding and ultimately applied for this course. I also used to love making Bebo skins and changing my MSN name daily (does anyone remember ?) - which I think also explains how I've come to end up pursuing programming!

Class Activity
I use a programme called Workplace Scheduling every day in my current role and aesthetically, it is very Windows 97 which just makes it seem even clunkier than it is! On a practical level, there are many limitations to the software that do not fit with how fluid the broadcasting industry is. Shifts ("requirements") are added to the system under a chargecode at the start of every financial year which I allocate staff to. News programmes for example follow a weekly pattern however many things can affect the normal timings. It is not possible to alter Reporting Scotland on a Tuesday in January and have it update every Tuesday going forward if that was required. I have to change each shift individually by clicking through each week. It is also not possible to mass delete a job via the chargecode which is needed often as jobs are cancelled or postponed often. I would definitely look to improve how the requirements all link together, and the ability of users to manipulate single and mass requirements. I would also add more functionality for a right click. For example, if i right click Nine News, I can drill down to that charge code and see only Nine News requirements.

Hello! I am Libby and I am from Edinburgh. I studied maths at nottingham university and graduated last summer. My working experience is limited to restaurants and an ice cream shop but I learnt to code last year and loved it! My first experience with code was with javascript, learning to make websites, as I was starting a business making and selling pants and tshirts so I wanted a website to sell them on. The business didn't make it very far but my love of coding lived on :-) In terms of this module I am looking forward to learning how to apply the skills I've picked up so far in a professional environment.

After graduating with a degree in Accounting and deciding it wasn't for me I went abroad for some years living in Canada then Australia and taking the chance to travel other countries nearby. I've worked all the typical jobs young people tend to do when travelling like I have, such as waitering, construction and even driving a tractor!. During my 3rd year of university I also worked in the financial department of an oil and gas firm in Aberdeen. In my travels I met many individuals working as software developers remotely which peaked my interest in working in the industry. I'm interested in developing web and mobile applications using JavaScript technologies. I'm hoping this course will further my understanding of software development and prepare me for entry into the industry.
