A Memorial Field is an important contemporary intervention placed at the Historic Site of John Brown's Farm in North Elba, NY. It is his family's former homestead, and the current resting place for him, and symbolically, the 19 raiders that fought alongside him at Harper's Ferry.

His raid on Harpers Ferry, with his fellow Raiders, some 20 men total, was a devastating loss for Virginia, but a win for strategy, tactics, and bringing the cause to a national awareness. John Brown's subsequent capture made the headlines of the day for the month while he awaited trial, and his words, reported by those who visited him while incarcerated, became the incendiary spark that started the nation toward the civil war just a couple of years later.

He was ultimately lynched by the then Governor of Virginia, ostensibly the president of the slaveholding states. he did not understand that his show of force would create a martyr, that continues to inspire us today, despite the propaganda spread about him then and through the years hence. John Brown, his Wife Mary and their family, all the raiders and silent supporters bravely started us marching toward the reckoning that we continue to wrestle with and prepare for today almost two hundred years laters.
