.According to the "Simple View of Reading," successful reading depends on proficient word-level decoding and linguistic comprehension. Children with ASD face challenges and barriers in reading due to the nature of their condition. Some typical difficulties they might encounter are as follows:

- Language Processing: ASD affects how individuals communicate and interact with others. These language development issues can make it hard for them to understand the language crucial for reading comprehension, such as metaphors, inferences, and emotions.

- Pragmatic Language: Children with ASD often have difficulties as they may not be able to follow social and conversational cues in a story, which are key to understanding the context that is written.

- Idiosyncratic Language: Children with autism may develop their own unique language style and terminologies, creating personalized labels and phrases that can deviate their understanding. This can hinder their reading comprehension and language development.

- Complex Language: They might have trouble understanding complex language used in texts, such as figurative language, which can hinder their comprehension.

- Fundamental Literacy Skills: There is often a deficit in foundational literacy skills among children with ASD, such as the alphabet, challenges in phonemic awareness, and difficulties with print concepts and writing. These are crucial for reading fluency and literacy.

- Sensory Issues: Children with ASD often experience sensory processing difficulties that impact their interaction with the physical aspects of reading, such as visual tracking of print or holding a book, which can affect their reading experience.

Phonological awareness serves as the foundation for various language skills, including word recognition, syllable segmentation, onset-rime identification, and phonemic awareness. Phonemes, the smallest units of sound in a language, combine to form syllables and words. They are essential building blocks that allow for the formation and manipulation of spoken language. Phonemic awareness specifically refers to a student’s ability to focus on and manipulate these phonemes within spoken syllables and words. As students progress to phonics, they learn the relationship between a phoneme (sound) and a grapheme (the letter or letters that represent the sound) in written language.

Phonics involves understanding the relationship between the letters or combinations of letters in written language and the individual sounds in spoken language. Phonics instruction includes teaching this relationship through explicit instruction in decoding strategies and implicit learning through exposure. Effective phonics instruction incorporates elements such as regular and irregular word patterns, high-frequency words, multisyllabic words, decoding skills, and developing automaticity in reading.

Starfall is an educational website that offers interactive games and activities to improve phonemic awareness. It is designed to teach reading to young children. The program is structured across several levels that introduce phonemic awareness concepts in a progressively challenging format. It begins by introducing the sounds of letters; children can click on each letter to hear its sound, helping them make the connection between letters and sounds. As children progress to the ‘Learn to Read’ section, it employs a systematic phonics approach by blending sounds into words through interactive games and songs. It progresses to segmenting and blending through various interactive stories and games. Starfall is beneficial for students with ASD because it is structured with visual and auditory stimuli to aid in phoneme recognition.

Vocabulary development is an ongoing process that involves learning and understanding words, not just knowing their definitions but also using them in context. It is influenced by various factors, including reading, speaking, and writing activities, and varies based on educational background, experiences, and home environment. Factors such as access to books at home and speaking a second language can also affect vocabulary growth. Understanding vocabulary is crucial for effective reading comprehension and is a foundational aspect of overall language development. Effective vocabulary development involves both accidental and intentional learning strategies, including using context clues to infer meanings, analyzing word parts to understand new words, and engaging in semantic mapping to make connections between words and their meanings.

Reading fluency is the ability to read text smoothly and with expression, similar to normal speech. It encompasses three critical elements: accurate reading of connected text, reading at a conversational pace, and using appropriate prosody. Challenges in any of these areas can impede fluency. Effective techniques for developing fluency include summarization, fill-in-the-blank exercises, question-and-answer activities, and enhancing comprehension retention. Research supports various modeling strategies to improve reading fluency, such as teacher-assisted reading, peer-assisted reading, and audio-assisted reading. Repeated reading practices are also beneficial, as they allow students to practice reading texts multiple times to increase accuracy. Progress monitoring is crucial for developing fluency; it helps tailor interventions to support continuous growth in reading fluency.

Reading comprehension is about understanding the text's meaning and fully grasping what is being read. It includes understanding the author's message, connecting it with prior knowledge, making predictions, identifying the main idea, visualizing, and making inferences. There are two main strategies for reading comprehension: narrative and expository. For narrative texts, focus on the plot, characters, and setting. For expository texts, concentrate on the main idea, summarization, and recognizing text structures like cause and effect or comparison. These methods help clarify the text's factual information and logical flow.

Flocabulary is a fun educational platform that combines hip-hop music with academic content to create educational videos and activities across various subjects, including vocabulary. The site is designed to enhance student engagement and retention of content through raps and rhythmic presentations. A great feature is the music-based videos that introduce and explain vocabulary concepts through hip-hop music. Another great feature is that it’s interactive with fill-in-the-blanks, quizzes, and challenges that reinforce the vocabulary learned. The Lyric Lab is probably a favorite for students with ASD who love music; this feature provides students with the opportunity to write their own rhymes using the new vocabulary, encouraging creativity and content understanding. Flocabulary’s use of music, visuals, and interactive content is beneficial for retaining new vocabulary words. Its multisensory approach is appealing to students with ASD and accommodates different learning styles. One of the great benefits for teaching vocabulary is that it engages and motivates students to participate in learning through the Lyric Lab.
