I wish I could have been there! I think this is a nice site, though. Peer editing? Were we supposed to write poems, or do we need to do that for next time?

Those who didn't already have material got some time to just write. We gave each other helpful advice and suggestions on how to make our piece better. Afterwards, Rachel and Brandon got to share some of their work with Mrs. Sharp and the rest of us. They did great too!

New member joined! Welcome, Jayson!

5 members for meeting, hopefully will have better luck next time.

Met in hall outside Sharp's room due to room being taken over. Need to think of an actual back-up place because there could be upset teachers at students in the hall. Also, there was a custodial hold-up possibility. Any suggestions?

Someone expressed interest, so we might add another member.

Shared poetry already written and then wrote new poetry to share based on pictures that we found in our life.

A shout out to Kristina for her amazing memorization slam poem! (Could you upload it to the site for people to read?)

Is there a way to post this site on the northwood site?

I Know girls who are trying to fit into the social norm
Like squeezing into last year's prom dress
I know girls who are low rise, mac eye shadow, and binge drinking
I know girls that wonder if they're disaster and sexy enough to fit in
I know girls who are fleeing bombs from the mosques of their skin
Playing Russian roulette with death; it's never easy to accept that our bodies are fallible and flawed
But when do we draw the line?
When the knife hits the skin?
Isn't it the same thing as purging
Because we're so obsessed with death
Some women just have more guts than others

The funny thing is women like us don't shoot
We swallow pills, still wanting to be beautiful at the morgue
Still proceeding to put on make-up
Still hoping that the mortician finds us __________ and attractive
We might as well be buried with our shoes and handbags and scarves, girls
We flirt with death every time we etch a new tally mark into our skin
I know how to split my wrists to reveal a battlefield too
But the time has come for us to reclaim our bodies

Our bodies deserve more than to be war-torn and collateral
Offering this ___________ as a pathetic means to say,
"I only know how to exist when I am wanted."

Girls like us are hardly ever wanted, you know
We're used up and we're sad and drunk and
Perpetually waiting by the phone for someone to pick up and tell us that we did good
Well, you did good.

(I know I am because I said, "I am."
My body is home)

Try this
Take your hands over your bumpy love body naked
And remember the first time you touched someone
With the sole purpose of learning all of them
Touched them because the light was pretty on them
And the dust in the sunlight danced the way your heart did
Touch yourself with a purpose
Your body is the most beautiful royal
Fathers and uncles are not claiming your knife anymore
Are not your razor, no
Put the sharpness back
Lay your hands flat and feel the surface of scarred skin
I once touched a tree with charred limbs
The stump was still breathing
But the tops were just ashy remains
I wonder what it's like to come back from that because
Because sometimes I feel forest fires erupting from my wrists
And the smoke signals sent out are the most beautiful things I've ever seen

Love your body the way your mother loved your baby feet
And brother arm wrapping shoulders, and remember
This is important

You are worth more than who you ____
You are worth more than a waistline
You are worth more than beer bottles displayed like drunken artifacts.
You are worth more than any naked body could proclaim in the shadows,
More than a man's whim or your father's mistake
You are no less valuable as a size 16 than a size 4
You are no less valuable as a 32a than a 36c

I know Mrs. Sharp was talking about having a few of us open the School play... Each night before the play And Then They Came For Me the Poetry Slam Team recited the poem that the play was named for. [should I insert the poem here? suggestions on what else to say]

Meeting canceled due to lack of people and lack of room.

GOALS for December!

-Spread the word at clubs: Pride, Charger Chatter, Green Club, any others with a) extensive student participation and b) the potential for "passion" or "a new voice."

-Make a video to show during Plus 1. This will either include a 3-minute-long group poem including at least 3 of our members OR 3 separate poems from our members, each 1 minute or less.

-Have a party on the 18th (our last meeting before winter break). Rachel, Jennifer, and Brandon will have a meeting to attend first, so it will have to be just mixing/mingling until that ends.
How to accomplish this -
Goal 1: Find when NHS meeting ends so we can schedule the party.
Goal 2: Get food planned out.
Goal 3: RECRUIT, pass out flyers and spread the word so we don't have like nobody come and look totally stupid. We need to mention THIS PARTY if we go to other clubs and we need to put it in the video. And EVERYONE NEEDS TO TELL THEIR FRIENDS. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT.

-Plan a slam vs. Carrboro for January or February.

We stuffed our faces on sugar, some members eating like eight or nine cookies, and hyper-actively did our own things until we read some slam poems.

Lots of people came. Hopefully, they'll be more people at the next meeting.

POETRY SLAM OPPORTUNITIES!

If you are interested in attending a large-scale, big-deal poetry slam, the CUPSI national poetry slam will be taking place at Virginia Commonweath University (a 3 hour drive from here) next weekend. Semi-finals March 25th, 26th, and 27th will be free of charge, and finals March 28th will be $10. For more information hit up this website: http://www.acui.org/content.aspx?menu_id=106&id=24827

If you are interested in PERFORMING in a slam and possibly getting a chance to go to the International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in the summer - or if you would just like to go as a spectator to see some amazing youth voices - check out the SacPoe Voicebox Youth Slam on Saturday, April 25th. It is 7-9pm, and located at the Street Scene Teen Center, 179 E Franklin St, Chapel Hill.

Let me know obviously if you plan on going to either of those things. I plan on going to the Voicebox slam, so I can totally drive anyone with transportation issues.
