The Internet: Changing the Language

Nobody knows how the Internet will change people's habits. EMC (Electronic Mediated Communication) is a newer term. Changes in culture and language take time to adapt to, use, and eventually become part of a language. Nothing is guaranteed, but there are signs.

A. EMC as writing or speech

1. EMC draws on traits from both sides of the speech/writing divide.

a. We write e-mails, not speak them.

b. Most written language (legal, religious, etc.) can now be accessed on the web with minimal

style alteration other than an adaptation to the electronic medium.

c. Apart from audio/video interactions (like Skype or iChat), EMC writing lacks the facial expressions, gestures, and body posture and distance rules that are crucial in communicating personal thoughts and attitudes and moderating social connections.

2. New Communicative Opportunities in EMC

a. EMC outputs display differences from traditional writing with respect to their space-bound presence.

b. Messages in asynchronic chat groups and blogs tend to be long-term in character; but those in synchronic groups, virtual worlds, and instant messaging are not.

c. The majority of the latter is factually communicative, as is evident from the vast amount of reference material in libraries.

B. EMC offers new communicative possibilities in the way people can manipulate written language.

1. New Kinds of Text

a. There have been huge advances here since the early days when the stupid software, having been told to ban anything containing the string S-E-X, disallowed messages about Sussex, Essex, and many other innocent terms.

b. the text is manipulated to include keywords, especially in the heading and first paragraph, to ensure that a salient term is prioritized.

c. We receive a message which contains, say, three different points in a single paragraph.

2. Texts Sans Frontières

a. They are created at a specific point in time; and once created, they are static and permanent.

b. The distinction has commercial importance in online advertising, where an ad server is likely to serve a different range of ads to the top page of a site compared to its constituent pages.

c. The content comes from an inventory which is fixed at any one point in time, but frequently refreshed.

3. Panchronicity

a. Texts are classically treated as synchronic entities, by which we mean we disregard the changes that were made during the process of composition and treat the finished product as if time did not exist.

b. Such texts, whose identity is dependent on features from different time frames, I call panchronic.

c. The traditional terminology of first edition, second edition, first edition with corrections, ISBN numbering, and so on, seems totally inadequate to account for the variability we now encounter.

4. Anonymity

a. And in the case of the last of these, its absence presents linguists with a particularly difficult situation.

b. When we classify texts into types, we rely greatly on extralinguistic information.

c. Operating behind a false persona seems to make people less inhibited: they may feel emboldened to talk more and in different ways from their real-world linguistic repertoire.

5. The Future

a. The main issue for the future will be how to deal with the increased presence of spoken outputs, as a result of growth in Voice over Internet and mobile communication.

b. The biggest question marks to do with change on the Internet relate to the way EMC is developing—always difficult to predict as technology rapidly changes.

c. Indeed, in some parts of the world, where a wired electricity supply is unreliable or absent (such as a great deal of Africa), the only way of reaching the Internet is via mobile phones.

A. The Internet's impact on languages is unknown. The medium is apprehensive. Instant messaging (IM), text messaging (SMS), and Twitter are all examples of EMC. "What is up?" became "What are you doing?" Both sides of the speech/writing spectrum are used in EMC. Users can converse without ever touching a keyboard. Virtual worlds and email all display basic speech properties. So they expect a fast response. Unlike in-person, their words are urgent—a visual style best exemplified on the web. The distinctions between EMC and other written languages are clear. This list of essential writing skills excludes vocabulary, grammar, and orthography. Unlike written text, the electronic text is easily edited. EMC interactions with webcams are also changing (IM). Writing is visual, like fashion magazines. It is hard to learn a new visual language. With EMC, you can change words. Web pages support text with photos, maps, diagrams, and animations. The linguistic reasons for the graphological variations in Viagra. Change these texts to improve search rankings. Crystal Knitting Machine is the newest Crystal product. It has got an aluminum frame, five fun colors, and lots of Some search engines now block it. It is not easy with so many standard-setting texts. Moderators face content and organizational challenges. The cleaned text is missing parts (mostly vocabulary). Irrelevance or insensitivity costs money and PR. There are strict rules for ad placements in search engine Emails (letters) and web pages (web pages) have boundaries (i.e., broadcasts and interviews). Problematic are internet texts. Singular or series of text messages? An email, tweet, instant message, blog post, or other internet output requires a mandatory hypertext link. Include mouse-over glosses or images. Later languages require describing their features. True, EMC texts are not obsolete. These pages are shared on Wikipedia. They were created by many people. Panchronicity is likely to be significant online. For this reason, Wiki pages are semantically and pragmatically diverse. A wiki edit can be true or false, good or bad. In both cases, the change-maker is the same. Using chat rooms or avatars often conceals identities. Flaming, spoofing, trolling, and lurking are all examples. Anonymity is undefined linguistically. It is unheard of in the email. The sociolinguistic data corpus is incomprehensible to linguists. In this new view, intention and effect trump identity. Languaging ideology, according to Woolard, mediates between social structure and speech forms. According to Blommaert and Verschueren, ethnic conflict, separatist and other movements, and minority politics are covered in newspapers from a bottom-up perspective. To connect political theorists with sociolinguistic research on NLP, Blommaert proposes a new conceptual framework. An important theme in Blackledge's work is minority language rights. A bilingual method is the most successful way to educate some children, according to him. MLR, according to Blackledge, is a hybrid of country, heritage, globalization, and new media. To manage and govern immigrant families' choices of housing, work, and education, Pfaff contends.

Blackledge investigates specific language policies and practices, as well as governmental and popular discourses. Two opposing philosophies are identified: the symbolic association of language and nation and the instrumental use of language for empowerment.

Source:
https://pdf.zlibcdn.com/dtoken/73f79fc343505ce19fe3b8390c633e06/lnc3.365.pdf

Pages 8-9

After a slow start, the Covid pandemic has picked up steam in the final months of 2019. Numerous people lost their lives or became sick due to the virus's presence. The spread of the disease has been slowed by governments worldwide taking preventative and practical measures. To a certain extent, lockdowns and other measures can halt the spread of disease and protect the public. However, some support it and those who oppose it, so a complete lockdown curfew has advantages and disadvantages.

Initially, a complete lockdown has several advantages. The risk of contracting a disease can be significantly reduced by avoiding or minimizing physical contact with strangers. In addition to providing emotional support, working from home allows people to spend more time with their loved ones. As a bonus, lockdowns reduce pollution from factories and vehicles, good for the planet. Lockdowns have resulted in some areas seeing clear blue skies and mountains as soon as pollution levels have decreased. Many people can work multiple jobs from home, and the multitaskers known as generalists, have extensive knowledge in various fields. As a result of the lockdown, the government can concentrate on finding cures for diseases and setting up quarantine facilities. Lockdown ac, on the other hand, has numerous drawbacks. Nevertheless, blue-collar workers must keep working even though the pandemic is deadly and contagious. As carriers become more prevalent, transmission rates are likely to rise. Supplement shortages affect people who cannot afford to buy supplies for the entire lockdown period because of panic buyers and out-of-stock items. If the lockdown period is more extended than expected, the GDP declines, and the unemployment rate rises. Because of this, people would have daily problems.

Government officials should take advantage of a lockdown to devise their countermeasures to the fullest extent possible. In addition to those already mentioned, other adverse outcomes may occur if the lockdown is maintained for an extended period of time. Because of the long-term lockdown that has forced these countries to deal with economic issues on their own, there has been an increase in suicides and protests. An in-depth analysis of any topic will reveal its positive and negative aspects. If everyone complies with the government's curfew and has the necessary supplies, we are all set. My confidence in our ability to handle the upcoming, unprecedented events is based on that assumption.
