Again, Winston remembers. Finally, he shows he can still possess free thought because he journals to express himself. Winston understands how the telescreen works and is able to avoid being seen by the Party. Winston also purchased the book showing he is a functioning member of the more sophisticated human society. Finally, Winston used the pen to write. This is another example of technology only humans use. It also exemplifies written language which is a trait exclusive to humans.

His writing shows how he stands apart from others in society. He is undertaking something dangerous and this creates an internal conflict as the risks make writing an emotional challenge.
