By gathering information about the crime, crime scene and a victim involved, a profile can be composed of the unknown perpetrator, profiling is most often used in the investigation of murder and rape cases, especially where these crimes appear to a be a part of a series. Profiling’s aim is not to show who committed a certain crime. Rather profiling is about finding characteristics of the offender which police can use to narrow down their list of possible suspects.
