I would have been upset because it sounds like they're saying it in a negative tone. Something that student A should've done differently is ask what student B's name was in a more polite manner and leave out the part where student A didn't want to work with student B

I think it depends on the scenario because there are certain times where that person need to hear the truth rather than what they wanna hear and even then I would ask if they wanna hear my honest opinion or what they wanna hear but if it's something that made them feel less or bad then I would apologize
