Earthquakes are caused mostly by rupture of geological faults, but also by other events such as volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts and nuclear test. The measure of earthquake's power is called magnitude, the highest magnitude was registered in Chile in 1960, the measure was 9.5 on the Richter Scale. The effects of earthquakes include, but are not limited to the following; shaking and ground rupture, landslides and avalanches, soil liquefaction, tsunamis, floods and human impacts.

In conclusion, earthquakes are still being the main natural disaster and also we can't prevent them from happening but we can try to minimise the damage to buildings and structures that fall victim to earthquakes, the biggest way of doing this is engineering of the structures.
