She was in a nursery wanting food when a fire broke out in the middle of her house. Her brothers ( Justin and Jacob) were trying to put out the fire with cups of water. Elissa's mother was called by a women named Rachel who then notified Douglas about the fire. Before he even got home he could see the thick clouds of smoke that emerged from the house. When he got home he saw everybody out and alive and the house destroyed. However the tragedy did not end there. After the fire the prophet of the community had died at 98 years old. Page 24 says," While the loss of our home was traumatic, it was nothing compared with the loss we suffered later on that day. However he only allowed them to stay because Douglas helped make that home. Douglas is the owner of a company named Hydropac. This company sold aquatic vessel parts and at one point in time sold things to the government. Douglas planned on selling this company so he could earn a lot of money for his family, but in order to do that he had to arrange meetings and a lot of time was required. The prophet knowing of this sale advised Douglas not to sell his company so he could spend more time with his family. Warren Jeff's was said to be an intellectual, graduating with honors in high school and immediately becoming principle. He himself might be an intellectual, but that won't stop him from being strict. The wedding was on April 30th and Elissa's father had to take place of the sealer since the prophet was the one getting married. It may seem that because of this marriage Rachel would be elevated in stature, but of course like all women in the community she  was still "just property". She walked carefully down the steps to the sacred placer where there was a pool of water. A few of her family members were here to see her wash away all of her sins, including her father who was in the water getting ready for the ritual. As Elissa walks in she notices that the water is actually really high and up to her shoulders. Two other priests are in the water and they perform the baptism. One of Elissa's older brothers, Craig, had noticed this and tried to step in. To the religious community Craig was very problematic. He had a sharp mind and he spoke his opinions out loud. Travis, Craig's younger brother started questioning the religion just as Craig did. However, in Travis's case he was sent to a reform since he "still had hope to change". After Travis left the two brothers from the fire Justin and Jacob caught on.
