In chapter 2 Curley's wife is introduced as a character. Immediately it is made clear from her past references in the book that other men on the ranch see her as a tart. Curley's wife is seen only as a flirtatious person who is asking for trouble, and has "the eye" out for other men. This is an inference that can also be made be her first conversation in the book, with the men in their bunk house.

Chapter 4

Curley's wife appears again in chapter 4 when she talks with Lennie, Candy, and Crooks in Crook's bunk house. This is when small amounts are revealed about why Curley's wife acts the way she does. She mentions a lot of things in their conversation such as how whenever she talks to someone on the farm she is seen to want trouble, or how she too likes to be able to talk to someone every once in a while. In this chapter it is also revealed by Curley's wife that she isn't so fond of Curley herself, even though she is married to him. This point then leads to her asking the guys about what happened to Curley's hand, even though she knows quite well what took place. I think this is one reason she is so fond of Lennie, because she knows he stood up against Curley and showed him that he can't expect to treat others poorly without any repercussions.

Chapter 5

Chapter 5 is when Curley's wife has the most influence on other characters because of the events that occur. Curley's wife is first seen when she comes to the barn, where Lennie is alone mourning the death of his puppy. Curley's wife knew that the other men were out playing horseshoe, and most likely saw this as a perfect opportunity to talk to someone who wouldn't judge her like most of the other characters. Curley's wife then approaches Lennie and starts talking to him, even though Lennie says that George doesn't want him to have anything to do with her. Curley's wife still continues to talk to Lennie and tells him about some of her desires and past experiences. She tells him many things such as the fact that she only married Curley to get away from her "ol'lady", but through all of this Lennie was still preoccupied with the fact that he might not get to tend the rabbits now that his pup was dead. After Curley's wife finishes with her story, Lennie tells her about the place George and him had always talked about. He also tells her that he likes to feel nice things, which then leads to her letting Lennie touch her hair. She soon realizes it was a mistake when Lennie doesn't understand that he needs to let go. She screams and struggles to be free from Lennie's grasp which makes Lennie angry. He tries to make her be quiet so George won't get mad at him, but ends up breaking her neck and killing her. At the end of chapter 5 the men find Curley's wife dead in the barn and realize who had killed her. Finally, everyone except Candy leaves to go kill Lennie for what he had done.

Desires and Obstacles

Curley's wife is a very diverse character so some of her desires are obvious, but others are hidden deep down. It is clear from how Curley's wife acts around the men on the farm that she aches for attention, and wants someone to talk to. She wants companionship, just like everyone else in the book. Even though she is married, her life is boring and filled with loneliness, and she longs for it to change. Some obstacles Curley's wife faces to reach her desires are Curley himself, the fact that everyone on the farm thinks she is a tart, and that she is a women. Curley holds her back from having the exciting life shes always wanted, as she reveals when she talks to Lennie in the barn. Along with this because other men on the farm think she is just a tramp looking for trouble, they would never take her seriously or believe anything she said to them.
