As doubts start to rise of the safety of the shelter. A bomb hits the shelter killing several people close to Dariia, including Sonya and Natalia. With their shelter destroyed, Dariia and a small group of survivors begin their escape out of Mariupol. As they look around they see that the city they once knew is now unrecognizable.

The group steals a car to flee the warzone but the journey is fraught with danger. Dariia's silence and vigilance reflect her increased maturity and awareness. Chapter 13 mainly focuses on the harsh encounter between the group of survivors and the Russian soliders. Rather then letting their mocking break her spirit, Dariia protects her sense of self and identity. She silently endures the cold, the mocking and the powerlessness imposed by the soliders

Her refusal to be "rewritten" shows her inner growing power. At Romashka camp, Dariia also faces indoctrination attempts designed to make her doubt her past and family. However, she questions the propaganda and clings to her memories and sense of self. As well as suriviving physically, Dariia moves to actively protecting her mind and beliefs. Her near-drowning punishment for disobedience doesn't break her at all; instead in just strengthens her resolve.

The pressure to become "Russian" intensifies as the children are fed more propaganda and given new Russian names trying to further assimilate them into Russian culture, through all this; Dariia remains defiant. She refuses to accept her Russian name and only speaks Russian when absolutely nescessary. Though this act of resistance may seen small it is incredibly brave in an enviornment designed to erase her identity. Chapter 19 reflects the loneliness and emotional exhuastion Dariia experiences, she misses her family deeply, especially Rada and wonder if they even know where she is.

In Chapter 20 we see Dariia become more courageous in small but meaningful ways, though there's no dramatic escape or fight scene, she is becoming mentally tougher and emotionally smarter.
