Adab In Seeking Knowledge

During the first week, I learned about manners (adab) in seeking knowledge. Let’s break it down :

1. Adab Comes First

In Islam, adab is essential in everything. Having good manners toward teachers, books, and fellow students bring barakah (blessings) to the knowledge gained. Without adab, knowledge can become source of arrogance instead of wisdom.

2. Correct Intention (Niyyah)

The intention behind seeking knowledge should be sincere. If the intention is for showing off, pride or personal gain, it loses its spiritual value. The Prophet SAW said, “Actions are judged by intentions.” (Hadith Bukhari & Muslim)

3. Strong and Firm Determination

Knowledge requires commitment and consistency. A true seeker of knowledge doesn’t give up easily but remains steadfast despite challenges.

4.Humanity and Respect

Students should lower their voices, listen attentively, and never be rude to their teachers. In Surah Al-Hujurat (42:2), Allah instructs believers to lower their voices in front of the Prophet SAW as a sign of respect.

5. Patience

Seeking knowledge is a long journey that requires patience. In Surah Al-Kahf, the story of Prophet Musa And Prophet Khidr teaches that sometimes knowledge is beyond immediate understanding and one must be patient in learning.

Adab Towards Parents

During the sixth week, I learned about adab (manners) towards parents based on Surah Maryam (19:41-50). This surah hightlights the story of Prophet Ibrahim and his rescpectful approach towards his father, despite his father’s opposition to the truth. From this verses, we can derive several key lessons on adab towards parents :

1. Speaking with Respect (Verse 42)

Prophet Ibrahim addressed his father with kindness, calling him “يا أبت” repeatedly. This shows that even if parents are mistaken or oppose our beliefs, we must still speak to them with honor and love.

2. Guiding with Wisdom (Verse 43-45)

Prophet Ibrahim did not argue harshly but instead presented logical and compassionate reasoning :

He explained why idol worship was wrong

He invited his father to guidance by saying, “ O my father, knowlwdge has come to me that has not come to you; so follow me, I will guide you to a straight path.” (19:43)

This teaches us that when correcting our parents, we should do so with gentleness and wisdom, not arrogance.

3. Patience in the Face of Rejection (Verse 46)

Despite his respectful approach, Prophet Ibrahim’s father rejected him and even threatened to harm him. But instead of retaliating, Prophet Ibrahim remained calm and composed. This shows the importance of patience and not reacting negatively, even when parents are harsh.

4. Praying for Parents (Verse 47)

Prophet Ibrahim did not curse or abandon his father despite the harsh treatment. Instead, he said:

“Peace be upon you ! I will seek forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.”

This teaches us to make du’a for our parents, even if they are wrong.

5. Priotizing Faith but with Respect (Verse 48-50)

Eventually, Prophet Ibrahim distanced himself from his father due to his father’s persistent disbelief. However, he left in a peaceful and respectful manner. This shows that while obedience to parents is important, it does not override obedience to Allah. However, even when disagreeing, we must maintain respect.

Acquisition Of Hikmah From Ibadah

During the first week, I learned about acquisition of hikmah from ibadah. Let’s break it down :

1.Everything must be done with Ihsan (Excellence & Sincerity in Worship)

Ihsan means doing every act of worship as if you see Allah, or knowing that He sees you. When you perform ibadah with ihsan, it builds sincerity, awareness, and excellence in actions which are qualities of wise individuals. This mindset nurtures humility and focus, leading to deeper understanding and wisdom.

2.Every action must follow the Qur’an and Sunnah

True wisdom comes from aligning our actions with divine guidance. Worship according to the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah ensures that one is not just blindly doing rituals, but practicing with knowledge, purpose, and correctness. This teaches discipline, consistency, and how to live a balanced life which are signs of hikmah.

3.Fasting (Sawm) brings health benefits

Fasting helps the body rest, detoxify, and improve metabolism showing the physical wisdom behind the spiritual act. It also teaches patience, empathy for the poor, and self-control key traits of a wise person. Through fasting, one learns to control desires, leading to emotional and mental strength.

4.Prayer (Solat) brings peace and tranquility

Solat is a direct connection to Allah, and it gives spiritual comfort and mental calmness. In times of stress, solat brings stability and focus allowing one to make wiser decisions. Regular solat builds discipline, gratitude, and clarity all linked to hikmah.

5.“Innama al-a’malu bin-niyyat” – “Actions are judged by intentions” (Hadith)

This hadith teaches that the intention (niyyah) behind every action matters. A sincere intention transforms normal actions into acts of worship. Understanding and applying this hadith brings wisdom you begin to live purposefully, not just ritualistically.
