To be honest, the interview questions were a bit harder to create than the diagnostic ones. The idea of being careful to not make questions that could make students uncomfortable was kind of hard, knowing a little of their personal background from past conversations I know that some topics can be hard to touch. In the case of the diagnostic test, it was easier to get the questions due the references used of the CEFR for the English level A1. Also, following the context of the students, for the age, the test was more dynamic and included more things so they can show their knowledge.

My Experience Creating a Diagnostic Assessment

I'm familiar with creating diagnostic assessments, but this time I learned many important aspects that must be taken into account to obtain meaningful information that can support the creation of a good project proposal. I hadn't considered the importance of student background in the learning process and now I consider that it is highly important, so the project can be created based on students' needs and it's goals can be more objective. It was a little tricky at first because I do not have enough experience grading and evaluating the skills that I assessed (speaking and writing) but I felt supported by the main teacher of my group who guided me to evaluate professionally. It is interesting how diagnosis can help us to identify weaknesses, strengths and oportunity areas an then, create projects to face them and help our students to learn better. I really enjoy the process of discovering and thinking about different strategies to improve students' English skills.

Creating a diagnostic assessment for children was a bit difficult because I didn’t know what topics they had already learned before I arrived at the school. I had to guess what they already known based on their age, grade level, what they were learning when I arrived to the school, and also with my observations during the classes.

Trying to include a little of everything was a real challenge. I needed to cover grammar, vocabulary, and reading, listening and writing but I also had to make sure the test wasn’t too long or boring for them. The students are around 8–9 years old, and most of them don’t really enjoy reading, especially if it’s in English because they don't get the "message" or the "main idea" of the text.

I tried to make the test as simple and engaging as possible by using a short text, clear instructions, and fun activities like write the correct name of the object of the picture, matching or choosing the correct option. It wasn’t easy, but I did my best to create something that could help me understand their level without making them feel stressed or confused.

In my experience, making a diagnosis instrument was a difficult task at the beginning because it was the first time I had ever made something like that. I didn’t know exactly how to start or what elements I needed to include. I felt a little confused and unsure about the steps I had to follow. However, despite those challenges, I think it was a very good and valuable experience for me. I learned a lot during the process, and little by little, I began to understand how to create a useful and clear instrument. I realized the importance of organizing the questions in a logical way and thinking about the needs and level of the students. Thanks to that experience, I now have more knowledge and tools that will help me in the future. I feel more prepared and confident to create and apply diagnosis instruments in different situations. I also understand better how to adapt them to students of different ages and levels, This experience helped me improve professionally.
