She also received a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii and became one of the first African American to be a female chemistry professor at that university.  Ball studied chemistry at the University of Hawaii and later earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical chemistry and two years.  She received so many scholarships and had offers to attend both the University of California and Berkeley.
