The gladers reaction was shock, fright, curiosity, confusion, and a little bit of confusion. Thomas had only been there for a few days when everything started to change, and now he's done something that none of the gladers has been able to do for the past three years. When Thomas came out of the maze after spending the night, everything the gladers thought was impossible turned into possible. They were so shocked, and curious and frightened about what comes next. However, they were also frustrated and angry, because Thomas broke the biggest rule, and he is changing all of their lives. On top of that, Thomas is being swarmed by curious gladers, and the whole time he is embarrassed from the attention because from the start when he came up the metal box, he got mostly negative attention. Therefore all the gladers have mixed emotions related to these recent events and Thomas is the centre of attention and blame.

    3. In chapter 23, Thomas is upset. He is confused because he is not sure if he did the right thing helping Alby. Now Alby is in more pain than before. Also, he is emotionally scarred from the maze. The realization of being trapped is hitting him all at once. All the despair and depression is coming to him. He says the maze isn't just a matter of escape. He finally realizes where all the trouble comes in. The gladers do not know what lies ahead of them even if they get out of the maze. No matter how hard they try the evil people who call themselves "WICKED" still may come after them. They are all confused, angry and upset. This is how Thomas is feeling.

    4. During the changing. Newt tells Thomas in chapter 23 that first "your body wigs out and shakes and your skin bubbles and turns a freaky green colour and you vomit all over yourself". This is the physical pain that happens during the changing. The emotional pain is that “It brings back memories. Just little snippets, but
    definite memories of before we came to this horrible place. Anyone who goes through it acts like a bloody psycho when it’s over". Any glader that goes through the changing remembers memories from the past. No one knows exactly why they are different. Maybe it is because they had a bad past like, therefore they are upset. Or maybe the changing brings back false memories or memories that the gladers don't want to see. I think this is the case. I think that during the changing the gladers see something that makes them angry, upset, and even mentally ill that they or other gladers have done in the past life. As a result, they go crazy, running around telling stories that the other gladers think are stupid, and untrue.

    6. At the gathering, Minho suggests that Thomas replaces him as the keeper of the runners. I think Minho suggests this because he saw the bravery, determination, and intelligence in Thomas in that one night they spent in the glade when it was not there in him. Minho told Thomas to run, and he did so himself. However, Thomas stayed, saved Alby and defied all odds, by killing 4 grievers. Minho has been running for 2 years and he did not think of doing this ever! The council decided a punishment to Thomas to put him in The Slammer for a day. I think this is the right decision because Thomas seems to have more memory than the others and I feel like he may have a greater chance of getting the gladers out of the maze. 

    2. Alby tells Thomas that he has seen Thomas and he has seen the girl after going through the changing. Apparently, Alby saw Thomas and the girl and also Alby mentioned something about a flare. He was going to continue one saying you however he started choking himself and Newt had to rush in and help Thomas hold Alby down from killing himself.

    4. When Thomas went to visit the girl, He was looking at her for a little while when suddenly a voice popped into his head telling him that her name was Teresa. He told Newt this and just as Newt was about to ask him another question he started hearing the girls voice in his head saying his name and telling him that everything was going to change. he was frightened by this so he ran out hoping to get rid of the girl's voice in his head. Thomas ran all the way through the Maze and was running through the maze for an hour however the girl's voice did not go away. The girl or Teresa also said “It was you and me, Tom. We did this to them. To us.” Thomas is baffled by what the girl says and when he comes back. He goes into the deadheads and decides to sleep on it.

    6. After the Gathering Galley stormed out and threatened Thomas and Minho that he was going to murder them both. This is a huge breach of rules in the glade and if he was found, he would definitely be thrown in the slammer. Therefore gally runs away out into the glade. No one knows where gally is, and they are all just hoping he shows up. This is obviously not the case. In my opinion, I think gally is in the glade somewhere, and his friends are hiding him. This would mean that he does not have to show up for food, and he will not have to face the grievers. 

    7. In chapter 30, while Thomas is in the slammer, chuck comes to bring him lunch. The two boys start to converse about a variety of things including parents, and past lives. At one point chuck brings up how he cried every day since he got to the maze up until when Thomas came. This hits Thomas in a very meaningful way. Immediately Thomas tells chuck that crying is not bad, as he did it after the last griever fell off the cliff during their night in the maze. He tells Chuck that crying feels good and hat he shouldn't be ashamed. This shows many things about Thomas. For one, he is caring for Chuck, even though he does not show it most of the time. However, this also shows that Thomas has a soft spot for him, that he only lets out some of the time. He walks around acting like a tough guy most of the time, but eventually the caring, kind, and sensitive part of him comes out.

    8. In chapter 30, after a long, sensitive conversation between Thomas and chuck, Thomas promises chuck that he will get him out of the glade now that he is a runner. I think Thomas will be able to fulfil this Thomas. I think this because Thomas seems like the kind of guy who keeps promises because he cares about others. He also is very determined. For example, he was extremely determined to become a runner and he was able to do so. Also, I think deep down Thomas really likes chuck as he was his first friend, and he is always there for him, therefore Thomas wants to return the favour for 12-year-old chuck.

  • To reveal the maze code, Thomas traced each section of the map from each day on transparent parchment paper. He put all 8 sections together and realized that it revealed A LETTER!! They kept doing this for each day of maps until they were able to make out two words: Float...Catch. I think they will use these codes to escape the maze or open a secret passage through the griever hole as if they were some sort of password.

    1. At the beginning of the chapter, Minho maes a scene about how Thomas is disregarding the fact that the maps were burned, however Thomas tells Minho and Alby that while he was so called “disregarding” the maps, he figuring out how to escape through the maps. Minho is shocked by this and reveals that they in fact do still have the maps, after Alby’s warning, they decided to hide them away.

    1. The maze code revealed two words: FLOAT...CATCH. THomas wants to keep working to reveal more words however minho decides that they have to go out into the maze again while the others work. This frusterates Thomas because he knows the maze pattern repeats and that it is useless going out again. Minho co nvincesThomas to go into the maze because they are going to stay the night.
