Edward Thorndike proposed the transfer of learning.

Transfer of learning is all about how the things we learn in one situation can be used or applied in other situations.

Means the learning of one thing helps in the learning of something else.

Ex:

Imagine you’re learning to ride a bicycle. The skills and balance you gain don’t just help you ride that specific bicycle; they can be transferred to riding any other bicycle or even a bike. This ability to transfer learning is incredibly valuable in education.

General transfer implies that prior learning predisposes one to learn another task in a better manner. The learning of one task warms-up the learner to learn the next task more conveniently. This warm-up effect lasts over one session of learning.

For example, the same student may recognize that there is an organized structure that needs to be imposed on other types of writing as well, not just stories

Specific transfer means that every kind of learning consists of a series of stimulus-response associations. It means the effect of learning of earlier task on learning of second task. This kind of transfer depends on the similarity or dissimilarity between the initial learning tasks on the second task.

For example, learning to play basketball may help a person to develop skills in coordination, balance, and spatial awareness that can be applied to other sports, such as volleyball or soccer.

There's a second way to think about different types of transfer of information in addition to the distinction of positive, negative and zero. This second way of thinking about it separates transfer into two groups, called low-road and high-road.

Low-road transfer, often related to near transfer, is the process of applying familiar knowledge to a similar situation to where one first learned said knowledge. High-road transfer, commonly paired with far transfer, requires deliberate reflection in order to apply prior learning to a new situation.

Zero transfer just means that previous skills or information have zero effect on learning new skills or information. In other words, in this case the old information neither helps nor hurts the new information or skill. So, being able to play the piano would have no effect, good or bad, on your ability to learn the geography of Africa. Therefore, the information has zero effect.

Near transfer occurs when the training context and trained behavior are almost identical to the application context and application behavior. For example a student learns an arithmetic rule with problems on a worksheet and then applies the same rule in the same way on the same day to similar problems in a math workbook. However, he becomes confused when expected to use the rule in a word problem.

With far transfer, the two situations are interestingly different. For example, the student who has learned a basic arithmetic rule proceeds to apply it later in a variety of word problems with no cues. Or knowledge of Spanish facilitates the learning of French. Far transfer (sometimes referred to as “high-road” transfer) often requires insight or judgment not required by near transfer.
