Service-Learning Project Explained:
This project involved being part of Heritage Hero, where we planned and organised major school events. We had weekly meetings every Wednesday during lunch (1 hour) where we discussed ideas, planned activities, and assigned roles.

For National Day, we helped plan decorations, activities, and the overall setup for both year groups. For International Day, we worked on organising different cultural setups, making sure everything was ready and visually appealing.

A lot of the work also happened outside school, like going shopping for decorations and materials, and planning in the evenings. It wasn’t just ideas—we had to actually organise, buy things, and set everything up on the day.

Anticipated Results:
To create engaging and well-organised events where students can celebrate different cultures and feel involved.

Resources Needed:
Around 75 hours in total, including:

Focus of Project:
Providing Iftar boxes to people at Dubai Airport so they can break their fast on time.

Service-Learning Project Explained:
This project involved going to Dubai Airport during Ramadan and handing out Iftar boxes to travellers and workers. We went twice, and each time we had to work together to distribute the boxes quickly before Iftar.

We met about 1 hour before to prepare and organise everything, then spent around 4 hours handing out the boxes. After that, we stayed about 1 hour for transport and wrapping up. It required good timing, teamwork, and being respectful to everyone.

Anticipated Results:
People fasting are able to break their fast easily and feel supported, especially those travelling or working.

Resources Needed:
Iftar boxes (food and water), time (23 hours total), coordination with organisers, transport, and teamwork.

Local (Dubai Airport), but also international because we helped people from different countries and backgrounds.

Looking back at everything, I did quite a lot of different things. some of it went really well, some of it didn’t, but overall it was a good experience

what went well is mainly the bigger things like events and helping younger students. people actually enjoyed the events we planned and you could see it, which made it feel worth it. also with mentoring and Year 7 support, they seemed less nervous after, so that was good

what didn’t go well sometimes was just organisation. things felt rushed sometimes, or not fully planned. also group work can be annoying when not everyone does what they’re supposed to. and sometimes people didn’t really engage with what we made

I think the main thing I learned is that things don’t always go how you plan. you can plan everything but something will still go wrong. also that small things still matter, even if they don’t feel like a big deal

skills wise, I definitely got better at talking to people. at the start I didn’t really like speaking much but now it’s easier. also teamwork, being more patient, and just dealing with situations when things aren’t perfect

it did affect me a bit because I’m more aware of other people now. before I didn’t really think about stuff like helping the community or even small things like waste, but now I notice it more

I think it was useful because it’s not just school work, it’s more real. you actually do things instead of just learning about them. it also made me more confident over time

I did enjoy it, not all of it obviously, some parts were tiring or boring, but overall yeah it was good

I think I became more caring, more open-minded, and a bit more confident. also more reflective because I actually thought about what worked and what didn’t

I achieved the learning outcomes just by doing different types of projects. like events helped with teamwork, mentoring helped with communication, and the compost bin helped with problem solving. over time I just got better at things by learning from mistakes

Focus of Project:
Helping clean beaches and parks and reduce pollution, while raising awareness about keeping the environment clean.

Service-Learning Project Explained:
I was an organizer of a beach clean-up/park clean up team where we went to different beaches and helped collect waste. This included plastics, bottles, and other rubbish left behind.

We worked in groups, organised the clean-up, and made sure everything was collected properly. Over time, we also became more aware of how much waste is actually left in public spaces.

Anticipated Results:
Cleaner beaches, parks, habitats and more awareness about pollution and protecting the environment.

Resources Needed:
Time (around 41 hours), gloves, trash bags, water, and coordination with the group. We also needed teamwork and organisation to make the clean-ups effective.

Local / National / International:
Local – it took place on kite beach and jbr in the UAE, but also connects to a global issue (environmental pollution).

Focus of Project:
Designing and creating a compost bin that is fun and easy for young students to use, so they are encouraged to compost.

Service-Learning Project Explained:
This project involved designing and making a compost bin specifically for younger students. The aim was to make it simple, interactive, and easy to use so they actually want to use it.

I planned the design, thought about materials, and worked on making it functional and engaging. It was not just about building it, but also thinking about how students would interact with it.

Anticipated Results:
Students are more likely to compost and become more aware of waste and sustainability.

Time (32 hours), materials (wood, tools, etc.), planning, design ideas, and testing. Also feedback from students and teachers.

This project involved being part of the Commerce Society, where we worked on educating students about business-related topics and life skills.

We planned and sometimes delivered sessions or activities that helped students understand things like budgeting, making decisions, and general business ideas. It was about making these topics simple and useful, not too complicated.

Service-Learning Project Explained:
I was co-president of the Events Committee, working with a team of around 10 people. We planned and organised different events throughout the year.

This included larger events like Halloween Fest, Winter Fest, and a Ramadan Iftar for seniors, as well as smaller weekly events during winter to keep students engaged and motivated.

We used a group chat to communicate, plan ideas, assign roles, and organise tasks. My role involved helping lead the team, making decisions, and making sure everything was running on time.

Anticipated Results:
Students feel more engaged, less stressed, and enjoy school more through events and activities.

Service-Learning Project Explained:
This project involved mentoring younger students throughout the school year. We spent around 4 hours each week with them, helping with small tasks, answering questions, and just being someone they could talk to.

Some sessions were more academic, but other times it was just about supporting them so they felt more comfortable in school. We also had some planning time to think about how to help them better. It was more about building trust than just teaching.

Anticipated Results:
Younger students feel more confident, supported, and more settled in school.

Resources Needed:
Time (47 hours total, including weekly sessions and planning), communication, patience, and coordination with teachers. Also consistency, since it needed to happen regularly.

Helping take care of younger children during school breaks so parents can work or manage other responsibilities.

Service-Learning Project Explained:
This project involved babysitting younger children in the community during summer and winter breaks. I helped look after them, kept them entertained, and made sure they were safe.

Sometimes this included playing games, helping with basic learning, or just keeping them busy so parents didn’t have to worry. It required being responsible and making sure the children were comfortable.

Anticipated Results:
Parents feel supported and less stressed, and children are safe, entertained, and looked after.

Time (around 60 hours), patience, communication, basic activities (games, toys), and responsibility to ensure safety.

Focus of Project:
Helping younger students adjust to secondary school by giving advice, answering questions, and making them feel more comfortable in a new environment.

Service-Learning Project Explained:
This project was about supporting Year 7 students during their transition into secondary school. We spent time with them during a full school day, talking to them, answering questions, and sharing our own experiences.

Before the sessions, we did some planning, like thinking about what they might be worried about and what advice would actually help. During the day, we interacted with them in a more relaxed way so they felt comfortable asking questions. It wasn’t just presenting, it was more about real conversations and helping them feel supported.

Anticipated Results:
The aim was for students to feel less nervous, more confident, and more prepared for secondary school.

Resources Needed:
Time (around 15 hours in total), planning beforehand and gathering resources like games and setting up the table tennis courts took about 4 and a half hours, collecting the students in the morning and returning them to their class also took a while as we arrived early - 1 hour, communication skills, and support from teachers. The whole experience was about 9 hours. We also needed to be organised and ready to answer questions based on our own experiences.

mainly that kids are a lot of work. like you can’t just leave them, you always have to watch them. also they get bored really fast

they didn’t always listen which was annoying sometimes. I just had to stay patient and deal with it

I’d start by looking at what’s already available through school or local opportunities, and try a few different things at first. That way I can figure out what actually suits me before committing long-term.

Probably the fact that it’s not just academic. It feels more real and practical, and you can actually see the effect of what you’re doing.

Which aspect seems most challenging?
Staying consistent, especially with school workload. Also figuring out what I genuinely want to commit to instead of just doing something for the sake of it.

What do you hope to achieve from your service learning experiences, besides just fulfilling the IBCP requirement?
I want to gain more confidence and become more independent. Also to understand real-world issues better and feel like I’m actually contributing to something.

How do you think your service-learning program will enable you to grow?
It will push me to be more responsible and step outside my comfort zone, especially when working with different people or taking initiative.

They help guide how I approach service. For example, being caring and open-minded helps when working with others, and being reflective helps me improve over time.

I think it was, not perfectly but still. Not everyone joined in, but some people did and actually used the activities, so it wasn’t pointless.

I realised well-being isn’t just a topic, it actually matters in school. Also that simple things can help more than big complicated ideas.

Getting people to care was hard. A lot of students just ignore things like this. Also I wasn’t that confident in meetings at first, so I kind of had to push myself a bit. Some students also wrote hateful comments and took it as a joke so some post it notes had to be removed.

It made me think about how I deal with stress too. And also that I can help people even if it’s something small.

It gave people a break from school stress, even if it was just for a short time. I think that helped a bit.

I think it was successful. We managed to give out all the boxes and people were grateful. It was quite busy but it still worked out.

I realised how many people are still working or travelling while fasting. I hadn’t really thought about that before. It also showed me how organised things have to be for something like this.

The timing was a bit stressful because everything had to be done right before Iftar. It was also crowded, so you had to move quickly. After a while I got used to it.

It made me think more about others, especially people you don’t usually notice. It also made Ramadan feel more about helping, not just fasting.

It helped people break their fast, especially if they didn’t have food with them. Even something small like that can help a lot.

Working with different people was hard sometimes. also when things didn’t go to plan on the day. we also had to be careful with certain decorations, like for halloween we couldn’t use everything because of cultural reasons, so we had to adjust ideas and be more mindful

At the start I wasn’t that confident talking to them. I didn’t know what to say or if I was helping. But after a bit, it got easier and I just spoke more normally.

It made me realise I’ve actually grown since starting secondary. I also feel a bit more confident now when talking to people.

It helped Year 7s feel less stressed and gave them someone they could actually relate to. I think that made it easier for them to open up.

I think it was successful, even if it was small. We picked up a lot of rubbish each time. But at the same time, more always comes back, so it kind of shows the problem doesn’t just go away.

I didn’t realise how much waste ends up on beaches, especially plastic. Seeing it properly made it feel more real. It also made me think about how people treat the environment without really thinking.

What challenges did you overcome?
It was tiring sometimes, especially in the heat, and not always that enjoyable while doing it. Also just staying consistent over time. But I just kept going and didn’t really overthink it.

It made me think more about what I throw away and where it ends up. I’m a bit more careful now, even with small things.

It made the beaches cleaner for people, and also helps animals and the environment. Even if it’s not huge, it still matters.
