Service Learning Reflection (Projects 1–10)

Looking back at everything, I did quite a lot of different things. some of it went really well, some of it didn’t, but overall it was a good experience

what went well is mainly the bigger things like events and helping younger students. people actually enjoyed the events we planned and you could see it, which made it feel worth it. also with mentoring and Year 7 support, they seemed less nervous after, so that was good

what didn’t go well sometimes was just organisation. things felt rushed sometimes, or not fully planned. also group work can be annoying when not everyone does what they’re supposed to. and sometimes people didn’t really engage with what we made

I think the main thing I learned is that things don’t always go how you plan. you can plan everything but something will still go wrong. also that small things still matter, even if they don’t feel like a big deal

skills wise, I definitely got better at talking to people. at the start I didn’t really like speaking much but now it’s easier. also teamwork, being more patient, and just dealing with situations when things aren’t perfect

it did affect me a bit because I’m more aware of other people now. before I didn’t really think about stuff like helping the community or even small things like waste, but now I notice it more

I think it was useful because it’s not just school work, it’s more real. you actually do things instead of just learning about them. it also made me more confident over time

I did enjoy it, not all of it obviously, some parts were tiring or boring, but overall yeah it was good

I think I became more caring, more open-minded, and a bit more confident. also more reflective because I actually thought about what worked and what didn’t

I achieved the learning outcomes just by doing different types of projects. like events helped with teamwork, mentoring helped with communication, and the compost bin helped with problem solving. over time I just got better at things by learning from mistakes

Current number of hours recorded:
Around 100-120 hours (combined across different projects)

Have these been logged on the tracker?
Most of them are logged, but I still need to update a few recent ones

Learning Outcomes Achieved (How)

1. Identify personal strengths and growth areas
I realised I’m good at organising and helping people, but I need to be more confident speaking up and leading

2. Participate in experiences to show the 5 stages of service
Across projects like events, mentoring, and compost bin, I went through planning, doing, and reflecting each time

3. Demonstrate collaborative skills by working with others
Worked in teams (Events Committee, Heritage Hero), shared ideas, and had to cooperate to get things done

4. Engage in issues that are locally, nationally or internationally significant
Projects like beach clean-ups and compost bin linked to environmental issues, and Iftar boxes supported the community

5. Show awareness of ethical choices and consequence of actions
In events, we had to be mindful of cultural respect (like decorations), and in other projects think about safety and responsibility

5 Stages of Service (How)

1. Investigate
Looked at what the problem or need was (e.g. stress in students, waste in school)

2. Prepare
Planned ideas, organised materials, and assigned roles

3. Act
Carried out the activities (events, mentoring, clean-ups, etc.)

4. Reflect
Thought about what worked and what didn’t after each project

5. Demonstrate understanding
Applied what I learned in later projects and improved each time

Reflection

What happened:
I took part in different service projects like events, mentoring, and community work

How do you feel:
I feel like I’ve improved over time and become more confident

New ideas / questions:
How can I make a bigger impact instead of small actions? how can I involve more people?

Portfolio Review

So far my portfolio is organised but I still need to update some reflections and add more detail in a few areas

Evidence

Photos from events, planning notes, certificates, group chats, presentations, and feedback from teachers

Moving Forward

I need to finish updating my hours, complete all reflections, and make sure everything is uploaded properly

Interview Notes

Be ready to talk about what I actually did, what I learned, and how I improved over time

What ideas do you have for your service learning?
I’m still exploring, but I’m interested in doing something around either helping younger students or working on environmental issues. I like the idea of doing something that has a clear impact, not just something random, so probably something consistent over time.

What ideas do you have for getting started with service learning?
I’d start by looking at what’s already available through school or local opportunities, and try a few different things at first. That way I can figure out what actually suits me before committing long-term.

Which aspect of service learning excites you the most?
Probably the fact that it’s not just academic. It feels more real and practical, and you can actually see the effect of what you’re doing.

Which aspect seems most challenging?
Staying consistent, especially with school workload. Also figuring out what I genuinely want to commit to instead of just doing something for the sake of it.

What do you hope to achieve from your service learning experiences, besides just fulfilling the IBCP requirement?
I want to gain more confidence and become more independent. Also to understand real-world issues better and feel like I’m actually contributing to something.

How do you think your service-learning program will enable you to grow?
It will push me to be more responsible and step outside my comfort zone, especially when working with different people or taking initiative.

How can the attributes of the IB learner profile help in your growth?
They help guide how I approach service. For example, being caring and open-minded helps when working with others, and being reflective helps me improve over time.

How will you ensure you develop all the IB learner attributes during your service-learning core unit?
By thinking about them while I’m doing activities, especially reflecting after each experience and being aware of how I’m developing.

Did you read about the service learning stages and outcomes?
Yes.

How can the stages help you plan and carry out your service-learning ideas?
They help give structure, so I’m not just doing random activities. Planning, action, and reflection make it more organised and meaningful.

Are there any obstacles that may prevent you from engaging in service on a regular basis?
Time management, especially during exams or busy school periods.

What organisational and time-management strategies do you have in place?
Planning ahead and choosing activities that fit into my schedule, so it stays manageable alongside school.

How do you want to “show what you know”?
Through simple reflections, photos, and keeping track of what I’ve done over time.

Did you like doing this service-learning project?
Yeah I did. It was actually one of the better ones because it felt useful. Like it wasn’t just for school, it was something that could help people a bit.

Was your project successful? If yes, why? if not why?
I think it was, not perfectly but still. Not everyone joined in, but some people did and actually used the activities, so it wasn’t pointless.

What have you learned in terms of new knowledge from this experience?
I realised well-being isn’t just a topic, it actually matters in school. Also that simple things can help more than big complicated ideas.

What challenges did you overcome?
Getting people to care was hard. A lot of students just ignore things like this. Also I wasn’t that confident in meetings at first, so I kind of had to push myself a bit. Some students also wrote hateful comments and took it as a joke so some post it notes had to be removed.

How did this service affect you personally?
It made me think about how I deal with stress too. And also that I can help people even if it’s something small.

How did this service-learning project benefit others?
It gave people a break from school stress, even if it was just for a short time. I think that helped a bit.

What new skills did you learn?
Probably communication and working with others. Also just being more organised when setting things up.

How did this service-learning experience serve the community and/or connect to your career areas of interest?
It helped the school in a small way by focusing on students, not just work. And it kind of links to the future because you always need to understand people.

Which learning outcomes were achieved? And how?
I think I was caring because I was helping others, and a communicator because I shared ideas (even if not all the time). Also reflective because I thought about what worked and what didn’t.

What would you do differently if you did this service-learning project again?
I’d probably speak more from the start and try to make things more interesting so more people join.

What are your overall achievements from completing this service-learning project?
I feel more confident than before and better at working in a group. Also I realised small things can still make a difference.

Did you like doing this service-learning project?
Yeah I did. It was simple but it felt meaningful. You could actually see people needing it in that moment, especially at Iftar time.

Was your project successful? If yes, why? if not why?
I think it was successful. We managed to give out all the boxes and people were grateful. It was quite busy but it still worked out.

What have you learned in terms of new knowledge from this experience?
I realised how many people are still working or travelling while fasting. I hadn’t really thought about that before. It also showed me how organised things have to be for something like this.

What challenges did you overcome?
The timing was a bit stressful because everything had to be done right before Iftar. It was also crowded, so you had to move quickly. After a while I got used to it.

How did this service affect you personally?
It made me think more about others, especially people you don’t usually notice. It also made Ramadan feel more about helping, not just fasting.

How did this service-learning project benefit others?
It helped people break their fast, especially if they didn’t have food with them. Even something small like that can help a lot.

What new skills did you learn?
I got better at working in a team and communicating quickly. Also just staying calm when things get busy.

How did this service-learning experience serve the community and/or connect to your career areas of interest?
It helped the community by supporting people during Ramadan. It also shows how important teamwork and communication are, which applies to any future job.

Which learning outcomes were achieved? And how?
I was caring because I was helping others. Communicator because I had to interact with people clearly. And reflective because I thought more about what I was doing and why.

What would you do differently if you did this service-learning project again?
I’d be more confident from the start and maybe take more initiative instead of waiting.

What are your overall achievements from completing this service-learning project?
I stayed involved, helped people directly, and became more aware of others. It also made me a bit more confident.

Did you like doing this service-learning project?
Yeah I did. Helping Year 7 students who are starting secondary felt quite real because I remember being in that position. It felt nice actually helping instead of just doing something for marks.

Was your project successful? If yes, why? if not why?
I think it was successful because they seemed less nervous by the end. They were asking more questions and actually engaging, so I think we helped them feel a bit more comfortable.

What have you learned in terms of new knowledge from this experience?
I learned that small things like giving advice or just talking can actually help people more than you think. Also that explaining things simply is harder than it sounds.

What challenges did you overcome?
At the start I wasn’t that confident talking to them. I didn’t know what to say or if I was helping. But after a bit, it got easier and I just spoke more normally.

How did this service affect you personally?
It made me realise I’ve actually grown since starting secondary. I also feel a bit more confident now when talking to people.

How did this service-learning project benefit others?
It helped Year 7s feel less stressed and gave them someone they could actually relate to. I think that made it easier for them to open up.

What new skills did you learn?
I got better at communication and explaining things. Also working with others and helping people who are different from me.

How did this service-learning experience serve the community and/or connect to your career areas of interest?
It helped the school because it made the transition easier for younger students. It also links to my future because communication is important in anything I want to do.

Which learning outcomes were achieved? And how?
I think I was a Communicator because I explained things clearly, and Caring because I was helping others. I was also Reflective because I thought about my own experience.

What would you do differently if you did this service-learning project again?
I would be more confident from the start and probably talk more instead of overthinking it.

What are your overall achievements from completing this project?
I feel more confident, better at speaking to people, and more aware that I can actually help others.

Did you like doing this service-learning project?
Yeah I did. It was simple but it actually felt useful. You could see the difference straight away, like the beach actually looked cleaner after, which made it feel worth doing.

Was your project successful? If yes, why? if not why?
I think it was successful, even if it was small. We picked up a lot of rubbish each time. But at the same time, more always comes back, so it kind of shows the problem doesn’t just go away.

What have you learned in terms of new knowledge from this experience?
I didn’t realise how much waste ends up on beaches, especially plastic. Seeing it properly made it feel more real. It also made me think about how people treat the environment without really thinking.

What challenges did you overcome?
It was tiring sometimes, especially in the heat, and not always that enjoyable while doing it. Also just staying consistent over time. But I just kept going and didn’t really overthink it.

How did this service affect you personally?
It made me think more about what I throw away and where it ends up. I’m a bit more careful now, even with small things.

How did this service-learning project benefit others?
It made the beaches cleaner for people, and also helps animals and the environment. Even if it’s not huge, it still matters.

What new skills did you learn?
I got better at working with others and just showing up consistently. Also a bit of leadership when we had to organise ourselves.

How did this service-learning experience serve the community and/or connect to your career areas of interest?
It helped the local community by keeping public places cleaner. It also connects to the future because sustainability is becoming more important in a lot of areas.

Which learning outcomes were achieved? And how?
I was caring because I was helping the environment. Principled because I was doing something responsible. And reflective because it made me think about my own habits more.

What would you do differently if you did this service-learning project again?
I’d probably try to do more than just clean, like raise awareness or get more people involved.

What are your overall achievements from completing this service-learning project?
I stayed consistent, actually made a difference, and became more aware of my own impact.
