Families sticking together actually helped owners to keep slavery in place. Owners thought among themselves the benefits of enslaved people making families. Many of them reasoned that having families made it much less likely that a man or woman would run away. Families were often separated through trade or when they were moved from plantations. Africans were taken from their homes and forced into slavery. They were separated from mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers and they were torn from their family ties.

Enslaved men had been involuntarily sold away from their families through the domestic slave trade, either to nearby plantations or, in many cases, to states in the South. In the civil war, some African Americans were able to fight.

After slavery, African Americans turned to schools, churches, and family for centerpieces. Some even after slavery took the opportunities and rights of being a citizen to their benefits. Seven hundred African American men served in elected public office after Reconstruction and some even in the United States House of Representatives. But even after the end of slavery and reconstruction the KKK terrorized African American leaders and citizens in 1871, in the South.
