The Military Reconstruction Act was a law passed when the Radical Republicans had most of the power in the Congress in 1867. All of the military states were placed under the rule of former union generals. It caused each state to ratify, pass and enforce The Fourteenth and Fifteenth amendments. Many Southerners that did not agree with this act created gangs. The most vicious was the Ku Klux Klan they had shown violence to prove that they did not agree with what was happening. They had threatened and disagreed with the placement and equality of African Americans.

The Political Role of African Americans

After the war, African Americans had made themselves part of the political process. Out of the 125 Southerners elected to Congress, only 16 of them were colored men. Although there were more than just Hiram Revels (farthest left), he was one of the men that had made themselves a senator. He had been proof that The Fifteenth Amendment was actually taking effect. The Fifteenth Amendment was the main reason that this was allowed. It sated that, "“race, color, or previous condition of servitude." could not stop someone from voting or gaining a political role.

A Closer Look at a Carpetbagger (Diary Entry)

"I was ridiculed once again for attempting to make a way to the South with my carpetbag in hand. I had been making my way to the South to profit from the Reconstruction that so many people has tried making a success. I'm a "carpetbagger" because I do not have deep ties to the South, and I was to be argued that I was degrading the politic and business culture. I understand that that term was used because I only moved for my benefit and greed. "

Was Reconstruction a real Success or Failure?

The Reconstruction Era was a failure because although slavery was abolished and they had gained rights that was only the first step. Additionally, I believe it was a failure because it was a step into the right direction, but did not solve the real problem of trying revive the people after the war. It could also be considered a failure because it was never completed and was ended by a Compromise that just stated that it should not continue. Therefore, how can something be a success if it was never fully accomplished? Although people may say that it was a success because it allowed the amendments to be created, I strongly believe that it was a failure with the amendments and laws.

The Compromise of 1877 was made to settle the arguments of the US Presidential Election of 1876. Although it was not written, it was a secret deal that said that the Republican Party candidate, Rutherford Hayes, would become the next president and Democrats would regain the political power in the Southern states. He had been elected and officially and formally ended the Reconstruction Era and removed federal troops from the South.
