Personalized Overview of AI in the Entertainment Industry

I chose the entertainment industry and I chose it because it’s the industry I enjoy the most. Whether it’s through the movies I watch, video games I played, or the music I listen to. It’s an industry you can’t totally escape. Even when you are not interested in entertainment, a family member may mention a new movie, a friend bringing up a music album drop, or a stranger mentioning information in passing on the street. I’ll be covering various ways artificial intelligence is being implemented within the entertainment industry. Firstly, AI used to get personalized recommendations. Whether it’s listening to a certain song, a video game to add to your wish list, or a movie to watch on a streaming service. Secondly, AI subtitles to get localization faster for many forms of content. Especially on streaming movie services like Netflix. And lastly, AI scriptwriting and what it means to create stories humans connect to with a non-human co-writer. After that, discuss societal impact, future trends, and ethical considerations of using AI in entertainment. With companies now competing with each other for the best AI, it’s implemented in numerous ways. However, what I loved about the entertainment industry was a majority of the effort put into what I enjoyed was purely human. So it made me have an appreciation for the work. As collaboration between people made an amazing product. AI brings up the question of if entertainment should be consumed if not fully human, despite the efficiency of the technology.

AI Personalized Recommendations

Personalized recommendations are the options suggested to someone to interact with in various ways based on algorithms that watch the things you interact with often or give the most attention to. AI algorithms are created with content-based filtering, machine learning to figure out what a user likes. It increases user engagement and lessens work on humans surfing data for hours to find trends to recommend something on a streaming service. Even though this works for the consumer and content creators, it leads to people losing their jobs since many people made a living curating an experience for users on platforms. It’s interesting that AI can create a personalized experience for me on a platform, however, I do feel bad about how people are losing their jobs so I can efficiently find what video to watch on YouTube. The end product AI provides is not equivalent to the magnitude of people’s source of income being taken away.

AI Subtitles for Automated Localization & Accessibility

Subtitles have become a staple in entertainment. Mainly being associated with shows and films. For many, it’s a small preference, but for others it’s a crucial accessibility tool for example people in the deaf community. Companies are using speech recognition AI technology to take people’s voices and create subtitles. Using AI for subtitles has lowered cost drastically for them and helped fasten the process so that people of other countries can easily access entertainment of different languages. Even though humans are overseeing the progress of AI creating subtitles for quality purposes, they eventually might not be in process at all in the future. Whenever I watch shows and movies I always prefer to have subtitles on the bottom, and sometimes I question who’s making the subtitles. Knowing that a lot of them are automated by AI, I really hope that there’s still some oversight in the future. Just in case of an error on the AI’s part. Relying on AI’s capabilities, may make humans lazy in the quality control department of many companies which can lead to many mistakes that can be annoying. Especially for people that rely on subtitles to enjoy an experience. However, if done correctly, it can be an amazing tool to quickly help people understand each other faster than ever before on an international scale.

AI Scriptwriting and It's Human(oid) Touch

Scriptwriting is the art of writing scripts for various forms of media such as movies, films, video games, commercials, and etc. Companies nowadays are starting to use natural language processing and machine learning to create scripts in more efficient ways. The AI technology used for scriptwriting analyzes hundreds of scripts and based on that analysis foundation, creates unique scripts. Furthermore, creating plot twists and enhancing character developments with a simple request. However, AI can lack emotion intelligence organically in its scripts. Additionally, ethics of who holds the creative rights to scripts that are made and copyright laws come into play. The idea of AI scriptwriting sounds very interesting in terms of using it for a sense of inspiration for someone’s own writing. But I wouldn’t agree with the use of AI for whole scripts. It’s replacing human creativity, and sometimes you can tell when scripts are made with AI with how much they lack emotional depth and nuance in individuals. I think from a business perspective, it could lower cost for the labor of creating whole stories, however, it can be terrible for their consumers who may negatively judge them by their AI practices. Perceiving them as lazy, money-driven, and having no considerations for human contributions.

Many fascinating yet concerning things are happening in the entertainment industry right now when it comes to the implementation of AI. The main trend AI is being utilized for is hyper-personalization. Making each user experience as special as possible is top priority for companies and indie developers. Whether it’s making video games more difficult in real time to match the player’s skill level, having interactive non-playable characters in VR environments, music recommendations based on listening data, targeted advertisements based on screentime, and etc. Having experiences that cater to your life whether it’s your wants or needs is cool to think about. Especially, when a couple of years ago it may took me so long to find something I exactly wanted to watch or play vs now when I can be extremely descriptive with AI programs that can search for whatever I want. Furthermore, even assume what I think I would like based on my personal trends. But then I also think about my own personal data privacy as well. AI has run into issues when it comes to unauthorized data collection. Without explicit consent, AI uses massive amounts of datasets and infringe on user’s privacy rights. To add on, the hefty price tag of specialized hardware/professionals in order to implement the technology into companies’ systems in a smooth, powerful transition. Which brings up the question of accessibility of such innovative technologies. As well as employment opportunities being lost due to the decline in need for people for repetitive, time consuming tasks.

Societal Impact of AI in Entertainment and Beyond

I think the immediate impact many people think of first when it comes to AI is the effect it’ll have on employment opportunities. Even though jobs related to AI have increased drastically in order to oversee what the technology is making, it also leads to risk of job displacement for over 60,000 jobs alone in California, the main state responsible for much of the entertainment industry. Jobs such as 3D model creators, sound editors, and even actors themselves in productions. Additionally, there’s the problem of copyright and issues of creativity. AI models are being trained on copyrighted work on the internet. Creating work based on artists that had to practice for years to perfect their craft. Since AI is evolving at such a fast pace, copyright laws aren’t keeping up with the developments. Leaving massive amounts of grey area for people to get away with a lot without proper permissions and compensation for using others' past work to create new projects. What’s also concerning, is privacy for not only using people’s work from the past, but the use of people’s faces in media creation. Specifically, the invention of deepfakes online that puts people’s faces on top of others to pretend that someone is doing/saying something in numerous media content forms. Which falls into a concerning canny valley situation. To overcome challenges with AI, people are learning to balance human and AI work. Leaving AI for tasks that’s repetitive and miniscule compared to more important, creative parts of projects.

My research was a smooth process and I enjoyed learning about how AI has been utilized in many parts of the entertainment industry. Especially the aspects of how AI subtitles are becoming popular. I did have a minor challenge with finding ethics of AI usage beyond employment. But with various keyword searches I found other ethical discussions. Personally, after doing research, I’m equally optimistic and afraid of the future of AI not only in entertainment, but our world in general. 2025 already feels so futuristic with AI’s impact and I really wonder how the world will look in 20 years.
