This forced me to miss the AMC10 A last year. I also recently got my green card, so we were planning on going back to China during the past Summer, but we had to cancel the travel plans due to COVID-19. We are still deciding whether or not to go anywhere for Summer this year. I have not gone to a restaurant or movie theater since last February, and the only times I went outside were for my orthodontist appointments or competitions. I have a habit to sit outside every day after school now. I used to go straight to doing homework after school, but now I require some time to relax. Staring at a screen all day is very tiring. While sitting outside, I often eat a snack while playing chess with my mom or discuss math problems with her. I also have much less interaction with my friends, and the only time that I can talk with my friends is through FaceTime every Sunday. However, I have had a lot more time to do math. I have almost finished my introduction to Counting and Probability in just two months. I also practice a lot more of the AMC and AIME competitions because I have nothing else to do. It did not greatly impact my life because my schedule did not require many outside activities. My hobbies are doing math, reading books, and playing piano. None of those rely on being outside. I also had a pool in my backyard in case I wanted to swim. The greatest effect would probably have been not being able to go to restaurants and missing my AMC10 A competition. I believe that it made sense because we were and are in a pandemic. If we still go about life normally many more people would die. If everyone just stayed home and quarantined this pandemic should have been over by now. My family decided to not go outside unless it is necessary when quarantine was first announced. We would buy groceries every two weeks and never go outside to do anything.   • What were your first reactions to hearing about COVID19 when it first became a pandemic last year? I was very worried because many people were being infected quickly and died. 
  • How is today different from when the pandemic first happened? Everything has already opened up and life has pretty gone back to normal. Everything is under control in China. The vaccines are also helping greatly.
  • Did you have to cancel any major event like a vacation, a Bar Mitzvah, etc. because of the pandemic? Yes, returning to China at the beginning of the pandemic and many vacations planned to return to the US were postponed and canceled, respectively.
  • How has your life changed since first going on quarantine last year? Everything has gone back to normal now and the only change is that I am not and have not been with my family.
  • What would you tell yourself a year ago vs now? I would tell myself that things are getting better quickly and not to be too worried of society ending. I have confidence that the pandemic will be over soon.
  • What has the pandemic made you realize? I realized the importance to find the origin of a pandemic. I also realized the importance of taking the pandemic seriously and to try to control it as quickly as possible. We also need to be very careful when there is a pandemic.

  • Do you see any examples of racism, inequality, etc in events that have happened as a result of the pandemic? No.
  • How has your life changed since first going on quarantine last year? Nothing. 
  • What would you tell yourself a year ago vs now? I would tell myself that it will be a long process for the world to recover.
  • What has the pandemic made you realize? This made me realize that anything can happen and we need to be prepared for it. We need to enjoy and appreciate normal life. I have also realized how courageous and great the doctors are, and I am filled with respect for them.
