Ha is sad because when they are lowering the flag and south Vietnam’s no longer exist. Ha thinks that at this time she’s should be the older sister and made Herve older brother put his chick Andy doll to rest into the sea and watched it sink.

This shows how she has changed because she used to whine when she didn’t like something but in this quote, Ha said this straight forward and calm and instead of just complaining about herself.

Brother Khoi is hurting because his chick is gone, so Ha helps cheer him up. The struggle is how everyone doesn’t want to let go of their home, and wants to savior every bit of it. This shows how Ha is caring for her family at times of need, even sacrificing her own stuff

This quote shows how she cares for her father but she is also selfish in thinking about if she will ever reach. She says that she remembers her father, but first she needs to know if she will ever reach land.

By throwing away her prized possesion, the only remnants of the way her life used to be, for the sake of her brother, Ha shows that she has become compassionate. We know that the doll means a lot to her, yet she sacrificed it for the sake of the happiness of another. This shows incredible compassion and empathy, so coherently differing from the girl she was at the beginning of th novel- a girl who pulled other people’s curls and pinched them, who hid her brother’s sandals.

This quote shows that the is thinking of other people and can be un-selfish. If she is feeling guilt, it means that she is at least partially sorry for what has happened during the time that she was only thinking of herself. She has grown by being able to regret and care.

This shows Ha’s home is gone which is a gigantic change. It also goes on to sho Ha comferting her brother which is a big change of a shellfish girl always trying to beat her brothers. This change has bonded their whole family!
