Type of Study: Quantitative (structured clinical interview, adult attachment patterns, friend ratings)

Location & Year: U.S., 2004

Participants: 59 bereaved adults

Hypotheses: 1. Attachment-related anxiety, but not attachment-related avoidance, is associated with severe grief. 2. Both anxiety & avoidance are associated with severe grief, but in different ways. 3. Secure adults will adapt most easily to loss and all insecure adults will have a harder time

Method: 4 mo and 18 mo postloss, 59 bereaved adults were tested for anxiety, depression, grief, PTSD, & overall adjustment

Major Findings: Fearful-avoidant adults have hard time adapting to loss, but dismissingly-avoidant adults show resilience

Relevance to treatise: Avoidant children may actually adapt well to loss, so encourage them in their resilience. Resistant children may have hardest time, so need extra care.

Citation: Fraley, R. C., & Bonanno, G. A. (2004).
