In my own personal life, I am able to see how the divide between teenage boys and girls is so evident in my day-to-day life. In the picture, we’re able to see most of the boys on one side and girls on the other. In the required media “The Mask You Live In” " it was stated that “Masculinity is not organic; it is reactive; it's not something that develops; it is a rejection of everything that is feminine.” This would easily explain why growing up boys are automatically pulled toward male friends instead of females.

Society tries to construct Gender consciousness in our brains so topics such as the age gap, sexism, racism, etc., are not a surprise when they occur. The topic of Gender Consciousness was discussed in the reading “Fear of Feminism, Why Young Women Get the Willies by Lisa Marie Hogeland.” Hogeland discussed how gender consciousness takes two forms the awareness of women’s vulnerability as well as celebrating women’s differences. In reality, it is that these certain topics really truly affect women extremely negatively in any and all aspects of their lives. This is because girls are constantly looked down upon or when they’re not being looked down upon they’re being looked at as second best to a man doing the same job.

In my Ethiopian culture, it is known that women are supposed to somewhat obey their husbands and tend to their needs and wants. Even if it is not presented in some families and marriages you are able to see it in the Ethiopian media, shows, and dramas. I believe that the country is behind in realizing the gender roles that are in place and how they can be hurting the women that are affected by such expectations and ways of living.

In this photo, I was able to observe how all the players on the court were little boys. This immediately brought my attention back to our reading “Boyhood, Organized Sports, and the Construction of Masculinities” by M. Messner. Messner goes into how the role of sports is important in building up a boy's masculinity. Messner quotes others when he says something along the lines of “if a boy doesn’t play sports he is less masculine than one who does.” I thought the picture captured it because being that there were only young boys on the court shows that they are taught at a young age what they need to do to be more of a man.

I took this screenshot as I was scrolling through TikTok, seeing that it was a pair of gay black twins and one was handicapped. The comments were extremely disrespectful and I was shocked to see how others could be so rude to people while unprovoked. Learning that being a black gay man must be very difficult because not only are you not following the “guidelines” society has set out for men to follow in order to be masculine but they are also black meaning that they need to be able to deal with the racism that comes with having a platform on social media.
