Spain, France, Italy, Greece, are the European countries bordering the mediterranean sea. The famous cities include Athens, Barcelona, Catania, Dubrovnik, Florence, Ibiza. The Mediterranean sea has an area of 965,300 mi2 around 17,000 feet deep, around 5,650 football fields deep. Now, the Mediterranean is one of the busiest seas in the world, this is because of the bordering countries transporting goods. The Mediterranean is also a huge tourist attraction, mostly because of the beaches, history, cities, in the bordering countries. The weather is beautiful. The fishing economy is huge in the Mediterranean. The Romans used to think the Sea was the center of the earth, calling it mediterraneus, which is Latin for, "middle of the earth." The Mediterranean sea is responsible for the rise of many strong armies way back in BC. It helped the roman empire and the rise of Italy. It has always been a way of trade and traveling from country to country forever. The Peloponnesian war was fought between Sparta and Athens, It all started when Athenia was growing in power and looked troubling to Sparta. Athens had famously been a democracy, "Athenian Democracy." After 27 hard bloody years of battle, Sparta forced Athens to surrender. Athens then became an oligarchy. Just off the coast of turkey, a shipwreck was recovered, the 14 meter long shipwreck dated to be at least 3,600 years old.
