1. What are the likely tension/conflict when we are working with people of very different background/culture from ours?

Ans:
From the way we act and the we speak would give someone an impression of who we are. For instance, not many are used to the sight of people using their hands to eat and would find it unhygienic but to some, this is a practice over the past decades. This sort of impression would cause serious tension among people of different culture as those against their practice is as though they are being very bias. Being in a multi racial country, one should be open to accept differences and work along with it.

Language barrier may also cause conflict between colleagues as misconceptions may arise. One may misheard the conversation or does not even understand the langauge that the other party is talking in but still feels offended or insecure. Hence, resulting in conflicts between co-workers and leading to poor production at work.

2. Suggest 3 ways that may help promote harmony in workplace.

Ans:
Firstly, company should organise monthly company dinner where everyone has to attend to. During this dinner, people of different races would sit together and that is when communication will take place. This is because while being busy at work, they might not have time to chit chat with one another. Hence, by organising company dinners, this will be an effective way to gather everyone an foster better relationship between colleagues; building mutual understanding between one another.

Secondly, it is important to allocate people of different races to work together by ensuring that sitting arrangements are not done based on racial groups. For example, it is important to not differentiate based on their races.

Thirdly, it is also crucial for an individual to be open minded and be understanding enough to accept everyone's differences. By doing so, greater understanding between co workers can be achieved hence harmony is fostered in the company.

3.

Q1. Conflicts may arise when a majority group of people overestimate a minority group of peoples’ opinions, beliefs or suggestions just because they differ racially from a larger group.
It may also be due to how everyone else are having the false assumption, thinking that others view the world just like how they see it when it is clearly not the case. This creates miscommunications and misinterpretations, hence affecting and disrupting the entire team.

Q2. -Be open to establish friendships with people by making the effort to ask them about their cultures, customs and views because those are the people you are going to interact with almost everyday hence it is important to be aware and make a connection among others.

-Acceptance of one’s differences is the key to promote harmony in a workplace.
