For my contradiction I chose Happy and Sad. I chose Happy and Sad because, Happy and Sad holds so much emotion to it and it is also the title of one of my favorite songs. For this sketch I decided to draw a face inspired by the artist of the song. I wanted tears streaming down my females face with possibly a light smile on her face as she looks into a rainbow.

For this project I decided to pick my glass jewelry box and my stuffed animal I’ve had since I was little. Both these objects were given to me by my parents and they both hold significant meaning. For this project I plan on rolling different colors of acrylic paint on white paper. So far I’m not 100% what colors I want the background to be but I’m leaning toward vivid colors to represent a part of me in this piece. For this piece I will take pictures of my objects in different positions/ areas so I can layer them together. I am planning on layering and outlining my objects to show the multiple sides these objects hold. They don’t just hold one meaning they are transparent and have multiple sides. For this piece I plan on using acrylic paint, marker, color pencil, and different color pen to layer these objects on top of one another.

My idea for this project was to draw a portrait of a young girl (a teenager) in a euphoric state. I also played on the song Young Dumb and Broke and captured the essence of the song in this piece. I believe this piece is important because, it shows the nature of young adults and the unique period of time they are living in. Teenagers just want to have fun and feel free. My personal connection to this idea is how I feel my nature is as a teenager. As a teenager I want the opportunity to live free and live my life the way I want to, and this piece captures this essence. In this piece a question I addressed is what being young means to me and how I want to translate that through materials and composition. Do I want this piece structured? Or do I want this piece loose and carefree? For this piece I decided to go in a loose and free direction with loose materials like marker, and pen. Marker and pen have the ability to capture vivid movement this is why I chose these materials. For my research I studied loose artwork with fluid lines to draw inspiration and to create a composition. While researching I also studied what colors I wanted to use. I decided I wanted to use a vivid color palette to capture the young spirit of this piece but start with a black and white portrait to create contrast.

I started this piece by capturing the portrait in my initial sketch with black marker. I drew inspiration from Zendaya’s character in Euphoria. This character is constantly living in a euphoric state of mind as a teenager. I drew her face in thick loose lines to show the carefree structure I want to capture within this piece.i initially decided to use black marker because, I thought it was a good initial base for my piece. I drew ragged lines down her cheeks to represent no spirit coming from her. Even though it may look like tears, I initially wanted it too but changed the meaning of these lines as I developed this piece further.

I continued this piece by adding vivid color pencil (hot pink, bright green, and strong yellow). I chose these colors because, they are very vivid and capture a young fun essence. I outlined these colors on the boarder of her face to show her spirit radiating from her. I chose to overlap the colors to create contrast and intrigue within her face. I then took those same colors and outlined the shapes coming from her eyes to also show that she is radiating a young spirit. I then took a thin black marker and drew loose kinky lines surrounding her hair. I decided to do this to show that they young teenager spirit is radiating from her. I also chose to color her hair all black to add contrast to all the color that would be placed in my piece later on.

I continued this piece by adding intriguing lines and shapes. I decided to fill in her face with short lines to capture the euphoric state she is in. The lines aren’t really on her face but during this stage of euphoria she believes they are. I drew swirls ranging in size in the space of her neck to also capture a detail that would be believed in a euphoric state. I also decided to grab blue pen and outline the features of her face to create a hazy overlapping look that we experience while we are possibly influenced. I also continued adding to the background and drew loose kinky lines surroundings the ones I already drew to outline and create a focus on my figure. I placed small kinky lines inside the ones I already drew to add intrigue and distinguish them from the lines surrounding them as well. I drew these lines in black marker to balance out the color in my composition.

I finished this piece by completing the background. Since I drew inspiration from the song Young Dumb and Broke I thought it would de a fun detail to add dollar signs in different colors as the background. I pick vibrant markers to represent the feeling of being young and varied them in the background. Overlapping the different colored dollar signs created a busy and hazy background that I desired. Since my original sketch I changed a couple aspects of this piece. Instead of drawing in all black and white I added variations of vivid colors to really capture the essence of being young as well as the emotions tied to a euphoric state.

I decided to chose these colors to add a vivid background for this piece with colors that would be complementary to my further line detail. I filled my background first by drenching my brush in water and creating circles with the wet on wet technique to make the water color drip down the page. I believe this technique provided an interesting background for this piece as well as a nice base or my further line work.

For this project I originally wanted to draw a Greek sculpture as my “old” beauty and then redraw the new beauty standards on-top of it. However, as the semester went on I decided I needed to work fast on my independent projects. So my original plan was altered. I started out with a piece of water colored paper and I grabbed my watercolors. I took all the colors of the rainbow and applied the wet on wet technique so the color could drip down the paper to create the background. I picked the colors of the rainbow because, I wanted to capture the essence of universal beauty even though I was comparing the different standards. I believe this revision not only helped me to achieve a steady pace but helped me grasp a greater meaning within this piece.

I began this piece by selecting my color palette of acrylic paints. I started by choosing teal, grey, beige, red, yellow, brown, and periwinkle. I wanted this piece to capture an abstract concept of what my once upon a time felt like and looked like to me. These colors are vivid as well as muted tones and vary so they may capture the multiple dimensions this piece has to myself as well as my viewer. I applied the teal, beige, and grey on-top of one another to resemble the layering of clouds. These clouds represent the mood of my once upon a time. A happy and calm area with the opportunity to change any moment. I then outlined my initial mountain with brown paint so it was able to contrast against the grey as well as the teal. I then started making several outlines with my color palette to represent the many dimensions of this piece and the significance of each layer.

I continued this piece by layering my many colors of my mountains. I wanted each layer a different color to represent the multitude within my once upon a time. My once upon a time would hold different emotions as well as different adventures and these colors and layers represent these wishes I have. After I applied my initial outline of my mountain I added my pink, red, blue, and green layers, I painted these layers with acrylic paint. I applied the paint straight on with little to no shading. I decided not to shade these layers because I wanted them to be straight on to add to the abstract concept of this piece.

I finished this piece my completing my painting of the layers within this piece. I added the rest of my color palette as well which consisted of green, bronze, and gold. I added these colors into my palette to resemble other emotions in my once upon a time such as hope and optimism. One concept I also added was the stripe of stripes in the middle toward right. I added this strip as it resembles a non-traditional rainbow. This offers the sense of happiness and life I wish to accomplish and achieve in my happy place. The kinky lines within this piece creates the beautiful abstract mountain range I was hoping to achieve. Even though I want this initially, one change that I did make from my initial sketch was the meaning of my happy place. As I added more colors I wanted them to represent what I wanted to achieve and feel in my once upon a time instead of what a beautiful place could be.

I began this piece by grabbing a piece of green paper. I liked the color of this paper as it would add great contrast to the other colors within my piece. I then started drawing/ mapping out my eyes. I decided to draw the small ones first to create more space for the larger ones of significant decades. I drew my eye from the 30s and 40s first since these are the less significant decades I wanted to capture within this piece. After I drew those eyes I drew my larger ones from the 20s, 90s, 80s, and now. I drew these ones next because, I wanted to capture them in a larger space. After I did this I started to draw my kinky lines and shapes. I decided to draw these lines and shapes spontaneously as well as to fill up the blank space around the eyes. The lines resemble connection between the decades as well as capture that this is my main subject within this piece.

I began this piece by grabbing a roller and bright vivid acrylic paint. I chose to grab bright acrylic paint because, I love bright colors and it represents apart of me within this piece. I rolled the paint on loosely with little guidance. I wanted the paint to be layered and loose to create a unique background of vivid color. Instead of my sketch I didn’t roll the paint on in straight lines but messy lines to create a loose background to contrast my figures. This was my first step even though I didn’t take an initial picture of this process since this piece went by so fast. I know the importance of process photos but I simply forgot to take them.

I grabbed white and light purple colored pencils to outline my objects because they are the best colors against my background and stand out with the black marker as well. The point in layering my objects repeatedly creates the objection that these objects play many different roles within my life. It also creates intrigue within this piece. I wanted this piece to be an abstract concept because, I didn’t want the meaning of this piece to be obvious. I wanted the viewer to interpret what this piece meant in their own way. I drew my lines overlapping the ones I already drew and exaggerated them to comply with today’s beauty standards. I decided I wanted to show this idea through different versions of eye makeup looks from the 20’s, 40’s, 80’s, 90’s, and now. I admire the beauty from these decades and I believe together they show the evolution of beauty well. I wanted to show this idea as an evolution because beauty is an important part of my life and I admire different beauty throughout time and I wanted to show this in a fun way. Questions I had for this piece was how can I address this idea in a minimalistic but effective way? As well as what materials can I use to make this piece unique and fun? I decided to for this I need a colorful palette as well as paler to address the fun tone I wanted In this piece. I decided I would use pen and colored pencil to create the minimalistic style within this piece as well as to add contrast within this piece.

My idea of this piece was to draw minimalistic beauty interacting with nature. For this piece I want to take a minimalistic and colorful approach to show the interaction of nature with beauty and how it is similar as well. I want to create this piece with not shading and mainly incorporating line work and a vivid color palette. believe this piece is important because this piece will show how nature works with human in a positive way and how they both hold the same but different beauty. The personal connection I hold with this piece is my personal connection with nature and how we need to positively interact with it instead of tearing it done and see the beauty it holds. Questions I had for this piece was how can I use color effectively within this piece, as well as how do I approach this piece in a minimalistic way with heavy color? For this piece I decided that I needed to use water colors and pen to create a colorful and solid minimalistic approach to this piece.

My idea for this piece was addressing the unseen. I will address this idea by drawing an abstract face with vivid colors and lines. This piece is important because it plays on the viewers attention and depiction of abstract art and art in general. The personal connection I hold with this piece is my love of minimalistic and abstract art. I love color and drawing faces and this piece continues my love for these aspects of art. Within this piece I wanted to use an abstract approach to create an Picasso inspired piece of art. By using kinky fluid lines and bright colors I believe I was able to create this essence with a hidden face in this piece. Some questions I add for this piece was how can I use vivid color effectively throughout this piece? How can I approach an abstract style while obtaining the message within this? For this piece I used water colors and makers. I de used to use markers to create fluid lines within this piece that would come together to create a hidden face. I used water colors to create a background full of color that would contrast with the lines of marker.

My idea for this piece was to contrast soft vs. sharp as well as strong vs. soft with different subjects and lines. I wanted to show how these words contrast through a minimalistic way that we see throughout our everyday lives. The personal connection I have with this project is my love of flowers and the meaning that roses hold to me. I also love the contrast of hard lines within life as well as within nature and showing that. This project is important because it is addressing how opposites can work together and create a deeper connection with one another. Some questions I had for this piece was how can I address this piece effectively with a minimalistic approach? How can I draw these elements together so they work with one another as well as contrast each other? The materials I needed for this piece are pencils and markers. I decided I needed these materials to create the soft vs. hard. Pencil with minimal shading adds the soft while solid marker adds the hard element of this piece.

I continued this piece by drawing my lines and my hidden face within the clusters of circles and kinky lines. I started drawing lines with the black marker first to create a base. I then proceeded to draw circles in blue marker to create my eye for my face as well as to add intrigue for the background. Then I continued with the blue marker and drew multiple lines around the face loosely. I drew these lines with no intentional location since this piece is based on a spontaneous and abstract approach. As I continued this piece I then decided to draw random shapes within this piece to create further intrigue and structure for my hidden face. I drew these shapes in red marker to contrast with my background as well. I also drew random shapes around my loose lines to create further contrast and intrigue throughout this piece.

Then then proceeded by continuing to shade my flowers. I shaded softly with light edges to portray the softness of flowers and the lightness within this piece that would add my wanted contrast. After I drew/ shaded my flowers I then proceeded to pick my desired colors for my geometric shapes/ lines. I decided to pick vivid and contrasting colors for each of the lines and shapes to at my intrigue for this piece. I decided to place the colorful lines somewhat overlapping/ encasing the roses to show the clear contrast of these subjects and how they work together and against each other. I drew geometric shapes within the gaps of the lines and by the roses to fill in empty space and to add the contrast further within this piece.

I continued this piece by grabbing a black marker for my figure. I then proceeded to draw a continuous line drawing of my figures face with the black marker. I drew a continuing line to contribute the minimalistic style I wanted within this piece. I then traced this line sign green, pink, blue, and purple to make the line standout further against the vivid background. I then proceeded to fill in the shape of my figures eye and lips to make it stand out even further. I finished this piece by drawing this pieces connection with nature. I grabbed a black marker and drew an minimalistic outline of a leafy plant and an orange. I decided to draw these plants around the left side of my figures face to fill empty space and to create further intrigue within this piece. I then outlined the orange and plant with a orange and green marker to make these plants stand out.
