Social Theory: American Society is rooted in racism

The reason why I see the world like this is because racism is all that I have been seeing. No matter where you go there will be some type of thing that connects back to racism. Racism has existed in America since its founding. Back then we had white people bring Africans to America to treat them as slaves. Slavery continued for many years and was abolished after the Civil war. Even after the Civil war when blacks were freed, racism continued. We then had segregation, People of color mainly blacks were segregated from the whites. The reason why Segregation happened was because the whites felt like they didn’t want to be associated with the blacks and people of color. Today we still see evidence of racism in our society starting with the prison population and police brutality. There has been many cases of people of color being being arrested brutally, and there are also more people of color in prison than whites. One solution that could probably end racism is by giving more opportunities to people of color to be part of the government system. This government has been run by whites since the beginning of its founding and it is still run by them today. If we had people of color in the government and running it there will be less racism in this country.

This song relates to My theory Society is rooted in racism Because in this song J Cole talks about his experience while living in a white community. When he lived around that area, his neighbors thought that he was selling drugs. This relates to me theory because in this society if start to live in a certain area and you are a person of color like J Cole, people will always have assumptions of you and act differently to you.

One solution that I have that can probably end this racism in this society is to have more people of color in our government. What this will do is get rid of the white people that are in our government. If we have more people of color in our government, then there will be less racism. The reason there will be more racism is because they could fix all the things that are connected to race. For example they could give illegal immigrants legalization, stop the racial profiling, and prisons being filled with people of color.

ARTICLE: 2015 Police Violence Report

AUTHOR: Samuel Sinyangwe
DATE PUBLISHED: January 1st of 2017.
WEBSITE: https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/2015/
This article talks about the statistics on police violence that occurs in the United States. This article gives statistics about how many people were killed due to police violence, when it happened, and where it happened. The people who are affected by these statistics were African Americans.
"Black people were more likely to be killed by America's largest city police departments"(mappingviolence.org)."
This quote talks about how blacks are more likely to get killed by police in cities that are big. This relates to my theory because this shows how black people are targeted by police all

Police departments disproportionately killed black people, who were 41% of victims despite being only 20% of the population living in these cities"(mappingviolence.org).
What this quote is saying is that there were a lot of black people killed. Almost half of black people were killed by police and these people are only about a fifth of their community. Meaning they are targeted more than another race in their community.

Cristian Hernandez
Ms. Gisella Ramirez, Research Methods

American Society is Rooted in Racism

The way I began to develop this PA is I had to come up with a social theory that I could prove with evidence. After I came up with a social theory I began to gather up articles online, statistics, and a song that would support my social theory. I also had to find a solution to my social theory. Some things that I learned while putting together this PA is how fixed this society is for people of color and how racism impacts people of color.
