Vermont was a part of the British and when the American revolutions started they negotiated and became their own territory in 1777. Vermont was originally called New Connecticut before they chose the name Vermont. Vermont is a French word, Vert meaning green and mont meaning mountains. Vermont entered the union on March 4, 1791, and when they joined their admission statements were one of the shortest of all of the states.

Vermont is not extremely regulated and they are one of the few states in the US that is the least regulated. two of the least regulated things in Vermont are professional and occupational licensing. Vermont's citizens asked for more accountability from the people who provide "important services" such as individuals who work in doctors' and lawyers' offices. Vermont's agencies include the Agency of Commerce and Community Development, the Department of Economic Development, and the Vermont Child Development Division. all of Vermont's agencies are great for the citizens and really show how their bureaucracy is very lenient and wants to help their citizens.

Vermont has a complex court system. In the state, they have multiple different court systems within their state. It has the state superior court which is the higher appellate courts. It also has the state supreme court which is to help decide whether a law is relevant for today's times. Vermont also has a district court which is for limited jurisdiction meaning that they can decide on civil actions. within the federal courts, there are three different types of levels in the systems. The first type is the circuit courts which means there are people who sit in more than one specific place in the judicial district. Then there is the Supreme Court which talks about laws and how they should be implied or applied to the states. Vermont and the federal courts both have a supreme court, one is just state level which makes the laws for the states and the other is for the whole country. Lastly, the federal courts have appeals which are laws or regulations that require fast action and are made by higher courts.

in Vermont, they really prioritize their citizen's liberties. Vermont is also very progressive so a lot of the liberties that they protect include things such as abortion care, trans people, and the right for people to live freely with the right for everyone to vote. In the state, they have a lot of cases that help protect their citizens and their rights to a happy and salty life. Vermont protects a lot of civil rights and is very concerned with everyone having equal rights to everything whether it be rights for education, voting, sports, and a lot of other things as well. One major civil liberty they are included in right now is LGBTQ rights and making sure people can get married and have the same rights as other groups of people. Vermont is very progressive and admits that people are equal and feel welcome in the state.

Vermont as a whole has not had any huge controversy regarding elections, campaigning, or anything along these lines.

In Vermont, the partisan makeup is mostly liberal or democratic. In the last election, a lot of the people in Vermont voted Democratic, 66.1% to be exact. While there will be people who voted Republican in Vermont, almost everyone in the state voted Democrat. This also causes their party to be held mostly by the democratic party. The democratic party is the primary group in both chambers of Vermont's government. However, Vermont is mainly democratic, Their governor Phill Scott is a Republican and he was reelected and 70% of the population voted for him. The party makeup hasn’t changed a ton over the years, it has stayed fairly consistent with being a majority democratic government. Vermont has been a Democratic state since 1992 but before that, it was a Republican state for at least ten years. Vermont's population is mainly democratic with over half of the residents saying they lean more liberal. While not everyone is going to agree with one another, as a while Vermont's citizens are more or less on the same page when it comes to political parties and how the state will vote overall.

one thing going on recently in Vermont is the talk of how the government shutdown could really affect Vermont. On October 1st the government could’ve gone into a shutdown which would have been horrible but thankfully it didn’t happen. however, the talk of the shutdown could’ve been really bad for Vermont and if it ever does happen it will not be good for the small state. The talk within Vermont was about how if the government shut down it would create a funding lapse and all leave for employees would be canceled or go away. this would’ve been horrible for the citizens of Vermont as well because there would be no funds to help with food and basic need programs so depending on how long the government would’ve been shut down, thousands of people could’ve been in a serious predicament just to get basic needs. One other thing that could’ve happened or could have happened if the government shuts down is it would delay all the town flood recovery needed in the state due to the large amount of rain fall they’ve had. If this issue is to come back Vermont is not in a great position and it could do a lot of damage to their citizens and their state as a whole.

Vermont as a whole it is said to be one of the best states to live in. Although it is one of the best states to live in, everyone has different opinions and different thoughts on what could be better. As a society in Vermont one of the biggest issues is environmental issues. Climate change is Vermont's biggest environmental issue in the state, they are located very far north in the United States so they are supposed to have cold winters and cooler summers, but because of climate change, they are having very hot summers followed by shorter less intense winters and they are experiencing more severe storms on a more frequent basis. Vermont is trying to combat these issues but it is something that everyone has to help not just a few people in the state and not just the state as a whole but instead the whole country. One other public issue in Vermont is equality. Vermont is very progressive with equality and making sure that everyone is treated equally but there are definitely things they can still work on. Vermont is working on this issue by posting opportunities in the community that are happening each month which gives everyone the same opportunities. Vermont is also working on health equality so that way everyone can have the same opportunity to a happy and healthy life no matter who they are. Vermont is a very progressive state and they are very up-to-date on issues going on in the state and in the world. I think that it shows through the public issues going on in their state because there are no extremely negative issues going on within the state and there are a lot of headlines saying Vermont is one of the best places to live.
