I think the Fist Great Awakening was a passing fad of religious fervor because some were even beginning to suggest works might save a soul. I believe that the First Great Awakening was a passing fad of religious fervour because Johnathan Edwards wrote In the Hands of an Angry God to scare people into repenting. "Consider the fearful danger you are in: it is a great furnace of wrath, a wife and bottomless pit, full of the fire of  wrath, that you are held over in the hand of that God..." Later, people weren't talking like that and weren't as scared of things like that.
