I asked my students what could break their hearts. We talked about heartbreak. We talked about what we should do when we break someone's heart. I gave a picture of a heart and said, "This is your friend's heart. You told your friend that she didn't look pretty today, you told her you didn't want to play with her, you told her you didn't love her. I asked how your friend felt. We tore the heart in our hands after every hurtful sentence we heard. I asked what we should do now to fix the heart. We put the torn heart back together, glued it and examined it. Is the heart the same as it was before? Breaking a heart is easier than breaking glass, but both leave scars."

Our heart is full of love! How beaytiful is she! But how easily it can be broken by bad words and actions! We are concerned....The children cut the hearts with sissors and notice that unfortunately it is not the same. We try to make them on our paper like before but as a Greek proverb says "broken glass does not stick again!"

We discussed in class with the students what could break their hearts. Also what should we do when we break a friend's heart.

We tore the heart in our hands and thought about what we should do now to fix the heart.

Can we glue it and how? Is the heart as it was before?

We discussed with the students how our hearts and the hearts of our friends can be hurt and broken. We then suggested solutions to mending the broken heart. We played a game saying to each other words that break our heart such as "you are not my friend", "you are ugly", "you don't have nice clothes", etc. (words used by the children). Every time someone said something ugly to another, his/her heart was broken and with a symbolic move the children were cutting the paper heart.

Then the children tried to heal their broken hearts. They even said that they would rebuild it so strong that no one could break it anymore. They even decorated it with glitter to make it beautiful and shiny. I asked the kids, "The hearts are very beautiful and strong now, but do they look like the heart you were holding before it was cracked?" The answer was NO and the thoughtfulness was evident in their eyes.

We talked about how the behavior of others can broke our hearts like a glass and how we can fix this. Children had the idea to fix the hearts with a rainbow plaster because the rainbows bring happiness to everybodies hearts.

I asked my children if they know what a broken heart means. Then we did an exercise in pairs where the children played with their friend's heart by saying some not so nice words. They then each told how they felt and broke their heart depending on what they felt. They then tried to repair the heart by gluing it together but found that it could no longer be the same as in the beginning. Thus they realized that it is not good when they behave like that and they promised that they will think more ahead and will only speak nicely to each other.

we discussed phrases and tidbits that tug at our heartstrings. We've found that when the heart is crushed it's hard to be as it used to be… We wrote kind words that good friends use and closed them in the jar with the sweet words.

Many have told me that "broken hearts cannot be mended" or that "we manage to break hearts when we behave badly". Starting from their statements, we discussed actions that can break hearts and how we can fix such mistakes. So we set to work and built hearts, which we broke and then rebuilt. A brilliant idea.
