Anxiety isn’t developed by one factor but a combination of different things. Personality factors, difficult life experiences and physical health are some factors that could contribute to anxiety.

Family history of anxiety: If a family member has had anxiety there is a chance that you could’ve inherited it but it doesn’t mean that it is certain.

Personality factors: Research has suggested that children who are perfectionists, timid, have a lack of self-esteem or are controlling, will develop anxiety during childhood, youth or as adults.

Ongoing stressful events: Anxiety might develop because of events such as work related stress, living arrangements, family/relationship problems, emotional shock following a stressful event, abuse and trauma or death/loss of a loved one.

Physical health problems: Some chronic physical illnesses such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease can impact and contribute to anxiety.

Substance use: Alcohol and drug abuse can cause anxiety to worsen or in worse case scenarios if there is an excessive use of drugs and alcohol the bio chemistry in the brain can be damaged which causes the anxiety to worsen.

When anxiety is diagnosed the patient has to go through a physical exam to identify the signs that the anxiety may be linked to an underlying medical condition, blood and urine tests to identify if there is a medical condition and a detailed psychological questionnaire about the symptoms and medical history to help determine the diagnosis. Someone with anxiety is seen to have excessive amounts of worry which cause interruptions and distress during daily life.

In less serious cases of anxiety, a range of techniques for self improvement without any need of doctors can be done, such as meditation, fitness, maintaining a healthy diet, breathing exercises, programs and services online, and the communication and support from family members and friends. However, professional treatments can include:

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT):
Cognitive behaviour therapy is a form of counselling aimed at identifying behavioural and thought patterns that make an individual's anxiousness increase or prevent themselves from improvement when anxiety occurs. By doing so, changes can be made to any hindering patterns impacting on anxiety to reduce levels and aid with coping the mental illness. CBT can help motivate and bring on ways to deal with and let go of issues, solve problems, and distinguish between worries that are considered unproductive or productive.

Behaviour Therapy:

Behaviour therapy is another type of psychological therapy, however doesn’t aim to apply any changes to the attitudes or beliefs of the individual. Instead, work is done to encourage the performance of activities that make the individual anxious in order to overcome the fear, rather than running away or avoiding it. By providing a sense of satisfaction and reward after, such treatment allows people to cope with situations that make them feel anxious, and position the worry into view.

Medication:

Even though symptoms of depression are not experienced, countless varieties of antidepressants can be used to manage anxiety. Antidepressants are formulated to assist in reworking the disproportion of chemical messages between neurons in the brain that can causes mental illnesses like anxiety to occur. Benzodiazepines is also a drug prescribed that promotes relaxation and a decrease in tenseness, but only for short term use (2-3 weeks) as it can bring on addiction and reductions in coordination and attention.
