The 7th SIGLOC online focuses on exploring the feasibility of a sustainable society. The few weeks of this short course had exposed me to new and complex ideas that surround sustainability. Likewise, it taught me the importance of SDG 11 for our country as we are still focusing on unsustainable practices. Overall, I learned that achieving a sustainable society in the Philippines may be unattainable in my lifetime but it is still worth working on.

My internship with the Department of Agriculture was filled with industry and market analysis. At first, I was a bit unenthusiastic about these tasks but as I slowly finished my tasks I learned about the current situation of our agriculture sector - specifically, the struggles of our farmers and fishers. It was concerning how they weren’t fully supported by our national government and some only received meager support. This is why I want to pursue SDG 16 to enable each Filipino and to ensure fairness in our country.

My ECOSEM courses made me realize my passion for Labor Economics and my advocacy for SDG 8. My frosh year was a harrowing time for me as I was still grappling with the basics of Economics. I shifted from one topic to another because I can’t really find any interests. It was Dr. Largoza who stopped me from overthinking and urged me to pursue the topic I initially started with - structural unemployment. Researching on this topic had me thinking that our country is in dire need of some structured education.

Our thesis was focused on creating a holistic measure for labor productivity. It was a bit regrettable that we weren’t able to get a 4.0 for our THS2ECO but I still believe our topic has strong potential. Our study works well under SDG 8 as a performance indicator as we measure labor productivity on a micro-level which is an insightful measure as we were able to consider individual characteristics of workers.

Back then, I only thought of stepping outside of my comfort zone and I didn’t realize if I was really ready to take such a leap. In the end, I sort of regret it as I feel guilty that I feel that I didn’t give my full strength in teaching the participants. By the end of the session, I realized taking calculated steps is not such a bad idea as we are able to gauge our strengths and weaknesses.

But, what I hadn’t expected was that it was an arduous path. The 1 year I had my ROTC had pushed my mental and physical well-being pushing me to prioritize my academics over pursuing an officership with them. But this has taught me the importance of strengthening our overall well-being to shoulder through the challenges in our lives which urged me to pick SDG 3 as one of my advocacies.

We thought that this may be a good opportunity for us to expand our experience and, at the same time, accomplish something outside of our academic goals. The Gcash case competition focuses on financial inclusion in the Philippines. We were subjected to two cases study - though similar in the nature of the problem - wherein we are tasked to propose solutions using or expanding the services offered by the company. The competition was fun to work on and it made me realize my strong and weak points as an individual and a member of a group.
