Perhaps it's the way I am interpreting it. This quote to me is basically saying "because you don't want to look deeper into your life, your life is worthless." I believe that living is a gift for everyone and that everyone deserves to life their life the way they want, whether they want to examine it or not. When I think about this quote, I think the message Socrates is trying to give us is that life should be lived fully, explore, experience risk etc.. I think the quote is saying don't die without fully exploring what the world can offer. I disagree with the statement that "the unexamined life is not worth living". The way you live your life is up to you. This quote to me makes it seem like if you're not doing something important with your life like for say being a doctor, lawyer or have a family that your life has no meaning which I don't agree with that statement. Just because your life is in viewed and looked at deeper than others doesn't mean that it's not worth living it. Everyone was put on earth for a reason and the way they live it is up to them.

When philosopher Socrates said these words, he was being tried at court for corrupting youth. He responded with this quote and was ultimately sentenced to death afterwards. However, the term "unexamined" is not specified. What does unexamined mean in this context? That is up to perception, and as I read other people's comments, we all have different ways of viewing the same word. Given the events, this leads me to believe that Socrates is referring to the minority of youth who seemed unimportant, those who had been cast away. If that is the case, I do not agree with the above statement because the unexamined life is - well, just that - the unexamined life. Just because someone is not open or extroverted and not really thought of as an important person, does not mean that their life is not worth living. In fact, it may be the exact opposite, in some cases. A famous modern example that comes to mind is when Michael Jordan, a professional basketball player, had been cut from tryouts on his first day of high school basketball. That could make him as unexamined as the next person who got cut, but that does not give him or anyone else means to corrupt his mind to think pessimistically about basketball. Because he persevered, he eventually went into basketball professionally. I believe that when he say "the unexamined life is not worth living." He is basically saying that a life full of regrets is not one worth living. This is because we don't know what he was going through his mind when he said this. Maybe this quote is a reflection of his own life or the choices/mistakes he made and he is using the quote as an indicator to everyone so that we should be happy and not make the wrong choices that we will end up regretting. In a way he is warning us to be careful about every single aspect of life and maybe be gentle with it. The quote is saying that one is not living life if they aren't exploring the depths of it. If you go through life without questioning a single thing given to you, then are you really living? Are you really living as the best and most knowledgeable you? Or, are you living life like a sheep, following a leader, being told where to go and what to think. I interpret this quote as saying that because life is so vast and beautiful, you're put on this earth to explore it and question it and allow curiosity to take it's course cause that's a part of truly living and discovering yourself. I strongly believe that everyone is destined for greatness but few discover it, and this quote by Socrates ties into that. If we are all destined for great things and only few discover it, it's because those are the few who really challenge life by taking chances and digging deep into themselves and their surroundings. In my opinion what Socrates is trying to say in this quote is that we must examine our lives and everything in it. We must examine and explore the world around us because we only have a limited amount of time to do so. To leave the world around you unseen is a waste of your life. I also believes that he is saying our lives must have meaning. We should not follow others blindly, we should make our lives mean something, make our lives worth something.
