The genocide occurred because the Movement for the Liberation of Congo wanted to "clean the slate" and rid the forest of the pygmies. They first entered the forest, in 1998 and are still there to this day. According to an article on Gale, "Today, under environmental challenges and pressures to acculturate, pygmy society is changing rapidly. Political rebellions in the Ituri area following Congolese independence in 1960 hastened some of these changes." The evidence suggests that the pygmies are being greatly effected by environmental issues and a rebellion that came from a previous disagreement about Colognes independence. Another article from The Independent claims that, "The pygmies are threatened with being eaten as a weapon of war to get them to leave the area. Also, their attackers believe that by consuming the flesh of a pygmy they are conferring magical powers on themselves." The evidence shows that another reason the rebellion is attacking the pygmies could be because they believe that eating them would give them magical abilities. Finally, Justice.gov states that, "As MRG found in 2002, Batwa or Bambuti peoples living deep in the forests of eastern DRC had become targets of various militias, including that of Jean-Pierre Bemba and his Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC). Another article on the Independent notes that, "'Institutional disregard for the rights of the Bambuti and the lack of seriousness with which complaints of abuse are treated, have meant that all armed groups in the eastern DRC have been able to prey on Bambuti villages with impunity, looting and raping at will,' the report says." the article implies that because the complaints from the Bambuti are not being taken seriously, the rebels are attacking the villages without consequence. An article on Martin Herald reports that, "The Pygmy people have requested that these Crimes Against Humanity are reported and investigated but the conflict in the region and inaccessibility to the villages have left the Pygmies without a defender." the evidence points out that the pygmy people reached out to the government for assistance, but none could be offered because of the conflict already going on in Congo.
