There were records that dated back to 5th Century BCE that mentioned Tetanus, but in 1844, Tetanus was first produced by in animals by injecting them with pus from a fetal human tetanus case at The University of Turin in Italy. In 1889, they isolated the organism from a human. The suspected infectious agent is bacteria which enters through a break in the skin. Tetanus is a zoonotic disease which is infections that are spread between humans and animals.

Since Tetanus is still around today, Tetanus has spread everywhere in the world. The majority of Tetanus can be found in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa regions as shown by the map of deaths in 2019. Every year, approximately 213,000-293,000 have died due to Tetanus.

In terms of virulence, which can be defined as the severity or harmfulness of a disease, Tetanus is a very serious and deadly disease and should be taken very seriously if one tests positive for tetanus. The virulence has changed over time with the introduction of a tetanus shot which can prevent tetanus however if you get tetanus, a shot can't help as there is no cure to tetanus.

Unfortunately, Tetanus has no direct cure, however there is a tetanus shot which can be used to prevent tetanus. The shot is highly recommended and you will need multiple shots throughout your lifetime as the shot doesn't protect you fro your entire life. There are also no hospital tests that can confirm tetanus so the doctor will ask about recent history and make an assessment from there. Some medical adnvaces include a medicine that can be used for immediate treatment which is called human tetanus immune globulin which provides fast protection to tetanus but also doesn't cure it. There haven't been any new technologies applied to this disease.

Since there isn't a cure fore Tetanus the government hasn't really done much to combat the disease. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that the best protection against Tetanus is to get the vaccine before exposure. To try to combat the virus the CDC is working with other partners to eliminate neonatal and maternal Tetanus and spread vaccines to communities that need it most. I feel like the only thing leadership could do to combat Tetanus is making sure that everywhere in the world has access to the vaccine so we can help prevent tetanus from infecting individuals across the world.

From a societal standpoint, tetanus has affected the entire world so society has tried to implement ways to better prevent tetanus such as spreading tetanus shots across the world by the likes of the CDC. Society hasn't necessarily learned what not to do because it is hard to "avoid" tetanus but people are getting tetanus shots in order to prevent tetanus.

A. I think the most revealing aspect that I learned about Tetanus is that we still don't have an actual cure for it only a way to prevent it.

B. Something that I learned about my ideas that surprised me is that we don't get Tetanus from rust. Tetanus isn't a disease that is from rusty objects at all, it is actually from a bacteria that can harm you if it penetrates the skin. So if you can only get Tetanus from a rusty nail if that bacteria is on the nail.

C. Something I came across in my research that should have been a part of the assignment is that tetanus is Called lockjaw because you aren't able to open your jaw at all. I think a nickname section and why the disease is called that nickname would have been interesting.
