Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is commonly refered to as a season of events, but it’s actually only one day. Some people call it “Fat Tuesday” because they eat a lot of fatty food on this day, prior to fasting during the Lenten season. And others call it “Shrove Tuesday”, wich means the last day before the liturgical period. The celebration dates back centuries to pagan celebrations of fertility and the season of spring.
The season of floats, parades and parties leading up to Mardi Gras is called Carnival. The day after is called “Ash Wednesday”, a day devoted to fasting, reconciliation and praying.
The first carnival of New Orleans occured in 1800 and since then it has been celebrated every year 47 days before Easter.
So, basically, the New Orleans carnival is like the Brazilian carnival, only a little smaller and less known. They dance, sing, party and have fun! The general consensus is that you should party as much as you can, because Ash Wednesday and Lent are coming.
That season has even its official colors, such as gold, purple and green. And each color has a meaning: gold for power, purple for justice and green for faith.
Beatriz Nunes Passos de Andrade

Carnival of Venice - Marina Paixao

The Carnival of Venice takes place every year in the weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday. It is the last opportunity to enjoy the party before the forty days of Lent begin, just like in Brazil.
It started because of the victory of the Venice Republic against the Patriarch of Aquileia in 1162. In honour to this victory, people started to dance and gather round in San Marco Square.
In 1797, the festival was forbidden, but it`s happened since 1979, when the Italian government decided to bring back the history and culture of Venice. Nowadays, almost 3 million visitors go there every year.
The most popular outfits are traditional costumes of the 18th century lords and ladies and it`s also very common to see people wearing fantastic masks.
The classic mask is the Bauta, which covers the entire face. There`s also one called Medico Della Peste that was created by a French physician in the 17th century. One curiosity is that this mask was originally adopted for sanitary precautions while treating plague victims. Another masks are the Colombina, Moretta muta, Volto Larva, Pantalone, Arlecchino and Zanni.

The Up Helly Aa Fire is a festival that takes place once a year in Lewrick, a city in the northern islands os Scotland. It happens in the middle of the winter and marks the end of the New Year's festivals.

On the last tuesday of January, hundreds of inhabitants get to the streets of lewrick and other minor rural locations, dressed up as vikings warriors. They march thruogh the streets and visit important locations, always holding torchs. At the end of the festival, a real-size viking galley is realeased into the sea and burnt. The following wednesday is a public holiday in the city, to allow them to recover.

The "Up Helly Aa" nme means "Up Holiday of All", since traditionally there are other minor fire-related festivals in the region.

The current festival came out from older traditions of tar barreling (where a barrel is soaked in tar - a alcoholic drink - and carried by drunk citizens) that used to happen in the same period of the year, next to the Christmas and New Year. In the actual festival, there are also a competition between teams, who make their costumes, boats and musics for the event - just like Rio's Carnival.

The Lemon Festival, or Fête
du Citron (in French), has taken place in the city of Menton (in France) since 1933. The city is in the region in which the biggest lemon production in the Europe is located. The Festival started as a citrical fruit fair, but with the big public it attracted, it soon became more like a carnival. In each edition the festival attracts more than 160000 visitors and this number grows with each year. It lasts for three weeks in February.

During the festival, 10 meters high sculptures made with lemons, which usually needs about 140 tons of fruit in total to be made, invade the streets and squares of the city. Each year the festival follows a different theme. Last year's theme was the book ''20000 submarine leagues'' by Jules Verne. People build submarines, divers, turtles, fish and other insane creatures using lemons. The festival honored Brazil in 2006.

Although the sculptures are the most interesting thing of the festival, there is also a gastronomical part. Chefs prepare thematic dishes using lemons, of course, and typical food according to the theme, such as fish, in case of last year's edition.

For you to have an idea about how the Brazilians love this celebration, some years they start it a month in advance and end a month later.

In that festival, there are many parades with music and people dressed up with traditional costumes, which involves a lot of money. Moreover, people who don`t want to spend so much can celebrate too! Street parties are present all over the country, and most of them are free!

In fact, people think it`s time to do everything ever wanted. Becouse of that, many of them get drunk and party hard, and that`s why it calls the atention of many people of other countries. At the same time, the government conducts awareness campaings to help the population.

At the end of the festival, religious people stay fourty days without eating something they really love, as a punishment for those days, and thats a belief.

Everyone is welcome in Carnival!

The festival of San Fermín is a week-long, historically rooted celebration held annually in the city of Pamplona,in Spain.

The celebration starts at noon on the 6th of July, when the opening of the party is marked by setting off a pyrotechnic show (chupinazo). It continues until midnight of the 14th of july, when people of Pamplona reunite in the City Hall Plaza to sing the song ''Pobre de Mí''.

The most famous event of the festival is the encierro, or the running of the bulls. It consists of hundreds of people running in front of six bulls and six steers down an 825 meter stretch of narrow streets of a section of the old town of Pamplona. It ends in the pamplona's bullring, lasting around 3 minutes.

Saint Fermín is said to have been the son of a Roman Senator who was ordained a priest in Toulouse and later became Pamplona's first bishop. On a later preaching voyage, he was beheaded in France, and is now considered a martyr of the Catholic church.
