Name: Avery Gronowski Date: September 22, 2017 Period: 7th

Summer Reading Written Reflection

Part 1: Word Reflection

I chose The Great Depression for one of my words because TGD is going on whilst the book is taking place. You can clearly sense it happening. For example: When Bud goes to get breakfast with his fake family, there is a sign that says ‘’Sorry, No Work Is Needed’’. In TGD, a lot of people didn’t have jobs so many of them would go out and look for work. I chose Rules and Things because I feel that it pops up often in the book. In the book, it is clear Bud sticks to these ‘’Rules and Things’’. He states that he has rememorized them all, and even numbered them.

I chose saxophone, because, in the book, close to the end, Bud is given an Alto Saxophone. He immediately starts practicing. You can tell that the gift means a lot to him and he was going to use it as much as he could. Grand Rapids is the city that Herman E. Calloway and the rest of the band live in. This is also the city Bud travels to, first by foot, then by car, with the help of Lefty Lewis. Flint is the town Bud is from He lived with his mother early on in life, until his mother died, forcing him to stay at the Home. Flint is also the place where the Amoses live.

Book Review

Christopher Paul Curtis’s, ‘’Bud, Not Buddy’’, was an action-packed adventure story about a young Negro boy in The Great Depression. A lot of the action takes place when the main character, Bud, arrives at Grand Rapids and meets his ‘father’s’ band. In the book, the author makes me feel as if I am in the book, experiencing Bud’s adventure with him, and he does this, by using good amounts of detail, and comparisons the reader can easily understand. The characters are believable, although I don’t know anyone like them, I can name a few cartoon characters like these such as Batman because he was an orphan, too. The author describes them all perfectly, helping to make the characters seem like actual people.

Although the plots are not similar, Bud, Not Buddy reminds me of the first Percy Jackson book. Percy went on adventures and didn’t know who his father was until later in the story. I found the whole plot of Bud, Not Buddy interesting, seeing as it is one of the few Historical Fiction books I have read where the main character is a child. I would definitely recommend this book to a fellow student, especially if they’re learning about The Great Depression. This way, they can truly know what was going on and how people dealt with it. I, with absolute positivity, give this book, a double-thumbs up for, not only providing a thrilling story, but a whole new prospective on The Great Depression.
