Reflection _ Anna-Sophia

The first interpersonal skill I used was "motivation and encouragement". When we practiced the whole routine several times, a few of us grew tired and unmotivated. Thus, I tried to motivate them to make the best performance possible. This is important as the whole team can only work together and prevent injuries from happening if everybody is focused and motivated.

Another skill we used is "overcoming challenges" as sometimes we faced challenges during different poses, for example in the last pose Philipp and Anni were switched once. However, most of the time Anni couldn't lift Philipp above her head. We overcame this by switching their positions. This adjustment helped us successfully perform the pose and showed how we adapted to difficulties along the way.

The most important skill we used was collaboration, as working together was essential for successfully executing the poses. In gymnastics, collaboration is crucial because it requires trust, clear communication, and precise coordination between teammates. Without these elements, it would be difficult to maintain balance, ensure safety, and perform complex movements effectively. Here, we can use the previous example again as by working together we found the best possible solution. By supporting each other and working as a team, we were able to overcome challenges and successfully complete the routine.

It is important to communicate and work well with others in gymnastics is because it is a dangerous sport and people can fall from heights and therefore get injured. When we communicate and tell others that an exercise is too hard or that it won't work, we can prevent injuries.

However, we did experience difficult communication from time to time, as Mia, Philipp and I spoke in German, discussing poses and difficulties. Tijl isn't a native german speaker and therefore had problems understanding. I think this is definitely something we could improve next time.

I believe during the process I was very good at keeping track of our poses and transitions on padlet as we used my laptop most of the time. Furthermore, I was able to address everybody's problems and find the best possible solutions for everybody by simply communicating. I think this is important as it improved our teamwork and collaboration skills over time.

I believe we planned the performance really well on padlet, looking at adapting poses if they were too hard/too difficult and finding good transitions. Furthermore, I believe we were able to manage and use our time efficiently. We planned our performance really well, as we started with the first pose and then found others, then working on transitions in between. We also managed to time the poses to fit the chorus and our dance. By rehearsing and improving we were able to improve those further.

During this unit, I and all of us learnt how important it is to listen to your peers and collaborate as not everybody has the same opinion and is satisfied with the same things. For me it is very interesting, how much our collaboration developed from the start and how much that has helped the quality of our performance.

Moreover, we became better at solving problems in this specific area and also in other areas by sharing ideas and recommendations.

I am also very proud of my organisation skills this unit, be it on my laptop or in real life.

I would like to develop my practical skills further, as we did struggle with some poses first. For me, learning the poses and doing them was a lot of fun, and I believe it could be even better if we improved our flexibility or strength.

An example for a challenge we faced, is the eight pose where Mia stands on Anni's back. We realised that Mia couldn't get up there properly without losing her balance, being unstable or it being too heavy for Anni. As Tijl was able to get on Philipp after Mia on Anni, we solved this problems and let Mia stand on Tijl's back to get on top. After that, Tijl got on Philipp, holding Anni's shoulders and by using Tijl as support, Mia could raise her leg.

During this unit, I improved my collaboration, problem-solving, and organizational skills, especially by keeping track of our poses and transitions and working closely with my teammates to find solutions when we faced challenges. Going forward, I would like to improve my strength and flexibility, as these skills would help me execute more complex movements easier and more precisely.

Interpersonal Skill

The first interpersonal skill I used was communication. During our gymnastics performance communication was very important. We discussed our routine, made sure everyone understood their roles, and gave each other feedback to improve the performance. For example, when one of us struggled with a move, we talked through the steps and helped each other correct mistakes or changed positions.

Another very important interpersonal skill was motivation and effort. Some poses of our performance were difficult, and it took a lot of practice to get them right. We motivated each other to not give up. For example, when a Tyler struggled with the bridge where I wanted to jump over, we encouraged him to keep trying. This is important because the whole team isn't stronger than their weakest member.

The most significant skill I used was motivation and effort. Some elements of our routine were difficult, and it took som practice to get them right. It was very hard for me to stay motivated but we motivated each other even when we were tired or frustrated. For example, when we did the performance already 3 times and my team wanted to do again one I was very upset and tired. But they motivated me and made me feel better so we trained it another time what really helped us improving the performance . The constant effort we put in really helped us to perfection our performance

Why is it important to communicate and work well with others in gymnastics?

In gymnastics, it is important to communicate and collaborate well with others to make everyone knows their role and everyone feeling welcome in the group.

An example of communication difficulties was, when our performance ended but the song wasn't over.

Communicating:
I believe that communication was very important during the performance. I had to express my thoughts and ideas clearly so that everyone could understand what I meant. While it’s easy to think about this, explaining it to others was much more challenging. Throughout the process, I realized just how crucial effective communication is. For example, when I wanted to try a particular pose, I first had to explain each person’s role clearly so that they understood what they had to do. However, communication isn’t just about speaking; listening is just as vital. I believe this is crucial, as other group members may also have creative ideas. Therefore, it was important for me to listen to them and evaluate whether their ideas could work.

Tolerance of Others:
This interpersonal skill was also essential, as I had to be aware of the abilities of others. I have a lot of experience with gymnastics, having practiced it several years ago. For me, movements like forward rolls, , cartwheels, handstands, and bridges are relatively easy and straightforward. However, I learned that others in the group didn't have the same level of experience. Even though they were doing their best, their abilities differed. As a result, I had to accept that and find poses that worked for everyone. Tolerance isn’t just about accepting someone’s physical ability; it’s also about understanding their feelings. Some days, motivation was much higher than on others, and I had to accept that I couldn't expect the same level of performance each day. It was important to tolerate each group member and recognize that they were always doing their best.

Motivation:
Motivation was another crucial interpersonal skill for our group. We quickly realized how much the overall motivation affected the performance. For example, during one double lesson, we worked efficiently in the first part, but after an hour, many people lost their focus. Running through the entire performance was not a good idea in such a situation because there was always someone not willing to give their best. However, I always tried to give 100 percent, even when I wasn’t sure whether the ideas of others would work. I believe that if I remained focused and willing to practice, others would follow my example, which made a big difference.

Importance of Communication and Collaboration in Gymnastics:
Effective communication and teamwork are crucial in gymnastics, as a performance can only be successful when everyone works well together. As mentioned, both ends of communication—listening and sharing ideas—are equally important. Overall, I believe we communicated well and worked effectively as a group. However, we did face some challenges, particularly when we wanted to create a spectacular group balance. We all envisioned an incredible pose that would leave the audience stunned. While it might have seemed unrealistic, this became an issue because we didn’t communicate our ideas properly and didn’t fully consider the abilities of each group member. For example, we looked at professional balances online, and many of them were beyond our level. We tried two or three poses quickly, but once we realized they were not feasible, we moved on to another one. This wasted time and distracted us from focusing on perfecting a single pose with a few adjustments. Eventually, we realized that it would be better to focus on the simpler poses from our plan, as they were more suited to our level. Through this experience, I learned that rushing through the balances without taking the time to properly communicate and plan doesn’t help. When the group doesn’t communicate well about each person’s role in the balance, it leads to confusion and makes the task seem too difficult. Next time, I would focus on taking things slower and clearly assigning roles before attempting the balance.

Planning the Performance:
When planning our performance, I often suggested new poses or balances we could incorporate. I also considered our teacher’s feedback, particularly regarding the transitions, which were not as smooth as they could have been. I suggested adding a roll, cartwheel, or spin to the transitions instead of just standing still. I think this was a great improvement, as it helped to make the performance more dynamic and continuous. Anni primarily wrote most of the posts for our Padlet, but I always helped her with the transition parts to stay organized and ensure we remembered the elements we had added.

Effective Use of Lesson Time:
I believe our planning process was important because we organized each lesson efficiently. We always started with a warm-up, then ran through the performance without music so everyone could remember their parts. After that, we rehearsed with music once or twice. This structure helped us know exactly what to work on. Some days, we focused on adding new balances, while on other days we practiced existing poses and made adjustments to improve them. This approach ensured that everyone knew exactly what they needed to do when it came time to perform.

Personal Performance:
I think my personal performance during this unit was quite good. Although I already knew how to do most of the poses and transitions, such as handstands, cartwheels, bridges, and forward rolls, I still managed to improve them. For example, I learned how to do a handstand while holding someone’s legs, which was completely new to me. One of the poses involved standing on Anni with one leg while the other was in the air. Initially, I could only do this on the ground, but over time, my balance and stability improved significantly. This was particularly important for the performance, as I was often at the bottom of some balances, where stability was key, and at the top in others, requiring good balance. I would still like to improve my backward roll, as I used to do it well, but now I tend to lean to the side. It would be great to work on this skill further.

Challenges and Overcoming Them:
One of the challenges I faced during this performance was accepting changes and moving forward. Typically, I am at the bottom of most balances, but since the groups change every year, I ended up being on top for most of the performance. This was challenging because I had never done this before, and going up into the pose was more difficult than I had expected. For example, in the pyramid pose, even though it looked simple, getting to the top required careful balance to avoid putting all the weight on one person’s back. I overcame this challenge by practicing multiple times until we found a simple way for me to step up to the top of the pyramid from the side. This practice helped me gain confidence, and I now feel capable of performing this pose successfully during the actual performance.

1. Interpersonal Skills

1a. Interpersonal Skills Used During Planning

Interpersonal Skill 1: Communication
Explanation with examples:
During our lessons, I communicated with my group to discuss how we could improve our poses and which ones we should try. For example, when planning a pyramid formation, I suggested different ways we could arrange ourselves to make the structure more stable.

Interpersonal Skill 2: Listening to Feedback
Explanation with examples:
When I was at the bottom of a formation and someone was on my back, they kept losing balance and falling off. My teammates gave me advice on how to stand more stably and avoid moving too much. By listening to their feedback, I was able to adjust my posture and make it easier for my teammates to hold their positions.

Interpersonal Skill 3: Managing Time
Explanation with examples:
In every lesson, we stayed focused on our routine and used our time wisely. We practiced repeatedly and even had extra time to reflect on our performance. This helped us refine our movements and improve our overall routine.

1b. Importance of Communication and Teamwork in Gymnastics

It is important to communicate and work well with others in gymnastics because teamwork ensures safety and helps perfect the routine. If we don’t talk to each other, someone could get hurt—for example, if a teammate doesn’t say that a position is painful, we wouldn’t know to adjust it. Communication also helps us know where each person needs to be.

An example of when I experienced communication difficulties with my group:
Sometimes, my teammates spoke German, which made it hard for me to understand what they were saying.

I overcame this problem by:
Asking them to repeat instructions in English or demonstrate what they meant instead of just explaining verbally.

I learned from this experience that:
Clear communication is important, and sometimes actions can help when words don’t work.

2. Plan Effectiveness

2a. My Contribution to Planning
I helped plan our performance by suggesting different poses and formations. For example, I suggested a pyramid formation and helped figure out who should be in which position based on their strengths. I also gave ideas on how we could transition smoothly between moves. This worked well because it helped our group stay organized and confident during the performance.

2b. How Well Our Planning Supported Our Success
Our group’s planning process was effective because we practiced consistently and adjusted our routine when necessary. One challenge we faced was maintaining balance in a three-person formation. At first, we struggled, but we adjusted by repositioning our feet and improving our core strength. This made our final performance much stronger.

3. Performance Explanation and Evaluation

3a. Personal Performance Evaluation
During this unit, I improved my balance and stability. I learned how to hold my position for longer and how to distribute my weight evenly. However, I would like to further develop my strength and flexibility to make more advanced moves easier.

3b. Challenge and Solution
One challenge I faced was maintaining my balance when I was part of a base position in a group postion . I overcame this by practicing my stance and adjusting my posture based on feedback from my teammates. Over time, I became more stable and confident in my role.
