2. She has three older brothers, Khoi, Vu, and Quang.

3. One of Ha's favorite things is papaya. It's one of her favorite foods and one of the things she cares most about.

4. Before she left Vietnam, she had started growing a papaya tree, which she cared for greatly.

5. Ha can be rebellious and determined sometimes, when it comes to things she cares about.

6. For example, back in Saigon during Tet, she goes against the rules that say only male feet can bring luck, and is the first to touch her toe to the tile floor.

7. When Kim Ha and her family get sponsored and move to Alabama, she has a hard time adjusting there.

8. One of the biggest things she struggles with is English. Not just because the language is super complicated, but because in Vietnam she's really smart, but in the US she feels dumb.

2. She also cut and designed baby clothes for seamstresses, both back in Vietnam and in Alabama. 

3. Ever since her husband went missing, she has been depressed and prays often for him to return.

4. Kim Ha said that you could see all the sadness in her eyes, but even though she was in pain, she just kept working hard for her family.

5. Later on in Alabama, she prays for a sign. One to show her if he is alive or not.

6. And then one day she lost her amethyst ring. She asked everyone to help look for it and they checked everywhere, but they never found it. That was the sign she prayed for, which meant that her husband was truly gone.

2. He wants to become a veterinarian.

3. Back in Vietnam, he raised a chick

4. It died when they were escaping Vietnam, but ever since he refused to eat chicken.

5. That shows that he really cares about animals, especially chickens.

6. For Christmas, Khoi got two fighting fish and a hamster.

2. When Kim Ha was being bullied, Vu agreed to teach her self defense.

3. He also likes to cook and ends up attending a cooking school in San Francisco.

4. Towards the end of the book, Vu gets a motorcycle and helps Ha face her bullies.

5. He offered people rides on his motorcycle, including Pink Boy's cousin who was going to beat Ha up, so they started respecting him and Ha.

2. He also worked as a mechanic earlier on when his family first got sponsored.

3. Quang really values his education.

4. After they fled Vietnam, Quang started teaching everyone English, and in Alabama he acted as his family's translator.

5. For Christmas, he received tuition for college from The Cowboy and engineering books from Miss Washington.

2. He cared greatly about his children and even grew teary watching them sleep.

3. He enjoyed stewed eels and pate chaud pastries.

4. He would often follow his wife around the kitchen saying tuyet sut, meaning right away, when he was hungry. It always made her laugh.

5. Miss Washington lost someone in the war just like Ha, so they sort of have a special connection.

3. The Cowboy really helped Kim Ha's family get off the ground.

4. At the refugee camp, before they got sponsored, they were playing a bunch of American cowboy movies. So when Ha's family got sponsored, she thought the sponsor was a cowboy just like the ones in the movie. For a while, she thought he had a horse too.

2. She does warm up a little when Kim Ha and her family get baptized though. So maybe she is heavily christian.

3. When Ha and her family first were sponsored and moved into The Cowboy's house, they had to stay in the basement where his wife couldn't see them.

2. She is kind, but not that well understanding of Ha's situation.

3. She does end up correcting her mistakes, so Ha starts to feel more comfortable.

4. For example, she showed only pictures of war in Vietnam when explaining where Kim Hi is from, which upset her. So later on Miss Scott showed the beautiful side of Vietnam.

2. In the end, Ha gains her confidence and Pink Boy starts to respect her or at least leaves her alone.

3. When Ha was trying to explain that she practices buddhism, Pink Boy started mocking her calling her boo-da girl.

2. They are both very kind and respectful and helped Ha gain confidence and stand up for herself.

3. In her diary, Ha wrote that her most relieved day was the day that she met Steven and Pam.

4. Pam always wears a skirt past her calves and Steven always wears fancy shirts.
