The Caribbean is a group of islands and mainland territories that is located south of North America, north of South America and east of Central America. This arrangement of beautiful islands and mainland territories is known worldwide because of its vibrant and colourful culture which is as a result of cultural diversity. This, therefore, highlights the fact that Caribbean societies are influenced by cultural diversity, and it is this fact, that gives the Caribbean its unique identity.

Cultural diversity refers to the variety of ethnic groups, such as Indians, Africans, Chinese and Europeans that exist within the Caribbean society and the particular ways of life manifested by each group. The cultural diversity of this region has resulted from colonization of the Europeans in the fifteenth century, the forced migration of the Africans between the mid- seventeenth to nineteenth century, and the voluntary migration of the Asians in the nineteenth century.

Each ethnic group brought with them their traditional practices, for example the Indians brought their traditional foods such as curry and other spices, and the Africans brought their religious practices such as voodoo. These practices by the ethnic groups have all been incorporated to create what is known as the “Caribbean Culture”. In other words, as a result of cultural diversity, we have developed our own unique identity which is associated only with the Caribbean.

CULTURE ( UNIVERSITY OF WEST INDIES)

Prior to entering this course, I was unaware that Caribbean civilization dealt with a lot of different issues in our society. The teachings that I have learnt can be applied to the groups I interact with on a daily basis such as my social groups in UWI. Due to the teachings in Caribbean Civilization class it helped me to realize the environment I am in which is in the University of the West Indies, where I am surrounded by a lot of different cultures and a lot of different people. This realization helped me to open up to how my culture affects person on campus that are not from Trinidad in ways such as: food, clothing, and our native dialect. In the interview below I had the privilege of interacting with a foreign exchange student who spoke about his experience in Trinidad and how it changed his life. It was evident that even though we have hints of our culture in different countries it was not the same until you visit and experience Trinidadian and any other culture for yourself.

ARTIFACT DATE: 19/04/2017

CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is a prevalent issue in the region and it is an issue affecting many Caribbean countries. Climate change defined by NASA is “Climate change is a change in the usual weather found in a place. This could be a change in how much rain a place usually gets in a year. Or it could be a change in a place's usual temperature for a month or season.

Climate change is also a change in Earth's climate. This could be a change in Earth's usual temperature. Or it could be a change in where rain and snow usually fall on Earth. Weather can change in just a few hours. Climate takes hundreds or even millions of years to change.”

Climate change is of regional importance as most small islands are exposed to extreme weather events and changes in sea levels. These changes in climate can cause deterioration in coastal conditions, such as beach erosion, coral bleaching and rising sea levels. With these factors small islands are subject to intense hurricanes and subject to their coastal reefs being destroyed which would thus affect tourism and state of their country. Countries which are highly dependent on tourism like The Bahamas would be highly affected by climate change and thus The Bahamas would be paying more attention to the changes in weather and would be taking the necessary measures in advance in other to sustain their country revenue making element in case of any natural disasters.

ARTIFICAT DATE: 18/04/2017

Prior to entering this course i was of the opinion that the course material dealt with Caribbean history. However, from the first lecture it set the pace for the rest of the semester as it dealt with a lot of issues other than Caribbean history and it went more in depth into the topics that circulate under Caribbean history. I also saw myself understanding what "civilization" really meant. Participating in this course opened up my eyes as I understood that Caribbean civilization resides within every aspect of my life such as within my informal groups within the university campus as well as within my home. I was able to carry on certain conversations with knowledge learnt from this course whether it be gender equality or colonialism. Below is a video speaking about my journey throughout this course and how i felt that this course impacted all aspects of my life.

ARTIFACT DATE: 19/04/2017
