For the equation 
4x - 2y = 12 
  x + 2y = 8 
I got (4, 2) by adding the equations together like this

  4x - 2y = 12 
+(x + 2y = 8)
------------------
   5x + 0  = 20
   ---            ---
    5               5
         x = 4

(16 - 12) = 2y
      V
      4 = 2y
      y = 2

Then I checked my answer on Desmos and Quizlet.
