Topic :
Exploring the Impact of Psychology on Football Players' Performance and Results Beyond Skills and Talent

Introduce :
At the peak of the football pyramid, among the high value matches between the football elite which has already consisted of an exodus of talents and facilities and platforms, what determines the outcome is player psychology.

Observation :
As an avid follower for the past many years, I've been witnessing the games from the psychological POV and it has been a revelation. More often than we do realise, football keeps the world hooked week in week out contrary to the scoreline. And this is due to the unpredictable nature of a world class league like the English Premier League. At the highest level, there is no bad/weak teams, every team is capable of winning with the right approach.

Justification :
There's often many many outcomes that channel the David vs Goliath theory. A season is usually 38 games long and a team can dominate the charts for 30 weeks and bottle it within the last 8 games as the pressure mounts and the one who doesn't succumb to pressure and who never gives up on the hope ends up winning. Its never over till its officially over. There are instances of team scoring 3 goals in the last minute to overturn a 2 goal deficit. In sports, every 30 seconds is a long time!

Contribution:
to evolve the most watched sport in the whole world. THe sport has evolved in the last 100 years drastically, that the legends of the game are becoming more and more impossible. There was a time it was between Maradona and Pele, it was just about speed and technique to be a superstar, then came the era of Ronaldo and Zidane, It started including flair and aggression. and then we are in the twilight years of Cristiano and Messi. where they became football gods and never quite fulfilled the GOAT debate because they were so complete looking at their peak, they had the speed, technique, dribble, game reading, vision and both knew their purpose is to be the world best by competing with each other. and now we are almost achieving superhuman footballer, with strength , speed, stamina, technique, and most importantly mentality and leadership. This is very evidential through the next goat debate will be between Haaland and Mbappe. its gonna be a topic between sheer mentality monsters and ego along with the different of peak human performance.

Hypothesis

Psychological factors significantly influence the performance and results of football players beyond their skills and talent.a

How strong the will, who has the right reasons to win, who has the mindset to be unaffected by unforeseen circumstances.

The data collected during the study can be used to either accept or reject the null hypothesis in favour of the alternative hypothesis, providing evidence for the influence of psychological factors on performance.

Methodology

Historical analysis of the biggest upsets

Interview with amateur footballers and even grass root footballers about how they prep for a game and how they react to situations within the game

Apply thematic analysis or content analysis techniques to analyze interview data, identifying common themes, patterns, and insights related to psychological factors and their impact on performance.

Acknowledge any limitations of the study, such as potential biases, sample size constraints, or generalizability of findings to other populations

Key findings

Key Incidents during the game

Key public buildup before the game

Key atmosphere within the team

Key pressure in the period of time

Key Coach attitude in the media

Key Injury concerns and cause and reaction

1) Social identity and religious conversions. A study of the phenomenon of religious conversions through the lens of psychology.

2) The topic is about an investigation of the psychological mechanisms of religious conversions. Why do people convert to particular religions and what factors are involved that influence or drives them to do so. The research aims to investigate it in light of our best psychological science.

3) Many religious converts face discrimination for their decision, and so in an effort to reduce such discrimination the research hopes to articulate as clearly as possible the mechanisms involved in religious conversions to help everyone understand why they have come to the conclusions that they have, in hopes that more acceptance and empathy can be promoted towards them. It contributes to the field of psychology by filling in the gaps that exists in the literature regarding such studies in a specifically asian context, where most studies have been carried out in a western context, a differing cultural perspective would help shed light on this topic more, by seeing if it's findings are applicable cross culturally, and help see better the strengths and limitations of the theories involved.

4) The research question is as follows. What factors contribute towards religious. conversions?

5) The study will employ a qualitative phenomenological analysis to better understand the greater context and the participant’s lived experiences. Eight in depth interviews were conducted with individuals who were religious converts from prior belief systems. A purposive sampling approach was used to recruit participants. Finding participants who are suitable for answering the research question. They would be gathered by me walking into their respective religious organizations, and from there asking them directly for an interview. The recordings would then be transcribed to which would be subjected to a thematic analysis to identify common themes that show up.

6) Findings are as follows: Hardships (a period of hardships suffered prior to conversion, which the conversion alleviates to some extent), Religious Study (studying the respective religious traditions and their scholarly works that informs them of their tradition better), Social ties (friends or families or occasionally strangers which invited them towards the respective religious organizations), Numinous Experiences (a perceived direct contact from a transcended realm of which motivated their conversions), Ritual Behaviours (specific rituals and practices of the various religions that attracted them to convert to the religion).

1. The impact of social media and its effects on academic performance.

2. At least 60% of people globally use social media as of 2023. With its increasing prominence in people's lives especially in younger generations, I was interested in investigating its potential effects on their academic performance.

The aims of this project are:

a) To explore the students' relationship with social media and their usage

b) To look into how they manage their studies based on their social media usage

c) To explore how social media impacts the students in their academic careers and learning

3. In addressing the rise of social media use around the world, I wanted to investigate the potential impact it has in the education sector and on students in their development in the light of their academic pursuits.

I also hope that the paper would be able to offer perspective and awareness into the rapid new age technology and social media usage, as well as how the knowledge in seeing the rise of these aspects can help in better equipping educational institutions and students alike in seeing social media as a tool, through programs, to help better their academic journey in the future.

4. Research question: How do young adults' experience of social media use impact their academic performance?

5. Methodology:
- The research design is qualitative
- There are a total of 8 participants, 4 women and 4 men, aged 19-35 years old, either still studying in school or has been a recent school graduate of 1-2 years.
- Data is collected strictly through a semi-structured interview with audio recording.

6. The possible findings I may get out of this is that while social media offers opportunities for academic growth and to be better informed through self-learning, it may not have enough impact to say that it has been a positive influence in the academic context.

1)Title:

The influence of perceived parenting styles on self-esteem of young adults.

2)Topic introduction and aims.

Poor self-esteem among young adults poses a great challenge, which parenting styles can influence.

Aims:

The study aims to investigate how different parenting styles (such as authoritative, authoritarian and permissive) are associated with self-esteem levels in young adults. By analyzing this relationship, the research aims to determine whether certain parenting styles have a significant impact on the self-esteem of young adults.

Additionally, to assess the long-term effects of parenting styles on self-esteem in young adulthood. By examining the long-term effects, the research seeks to shed light on the lasting influence of parenting practices on self-esteem development beyond earlier developmental stages.

3)Contribution:

This project is important because understanding the influence of parenting styles on self-esteem in young adults contributes to our knowledge of lifelong development and psychological well-being. It provides insights into how early experiences within the family environment continue to shape individuals' self-perceptions and emotional well-being in adulthood.

4)Hypothesis:

Null Hypothesis : There is no significant relationship between perceived parenting styles on the self-esteem of young adults.

Althernative Hypothesis : There is a significant relationship between the perceived parenting styles on the self-esteem of young adults

5) Methodology:

Participants were 100 students from various universities in Singapore. The young adults selected for the study still reside with both their parents while those residing with a single parent were excluded.

Measures being tested: perceived parenting style using the PAQ and self-esteem using the RSES

The PAQ consists of 30 items that measure three dimensions of parenting styles. Participants rate each item on a Likert-type scale, indicating the extent to which the statements reflect their parents' behaviours or attitudes. They answer the same questionnaire twice in total, once for each parent.

The RSES is a 10- item scale that is widely used measure of global self-esteem. Participants responded to each item using a four-point response scale (1=strongly disagree; 4=strongly agree).

Procedure

Instructions to complete the 3 questionnaires will be read to every participant before the administration of the questionnaire and informed consent will be obtained from the participants. The questionnaires will be administered in a quiet room. Data will collected and coded anonymously.

Data will be analysed using excel. Descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, and skewness can be used to calculate descriptive statistics. These statistics help summarize the sample characteristics and provide an overview of the distribution of variables, including parenting styles and self-esteem scores.

Correlation Analysis: Excel's CORREL function to calculate the correlation coefficients between parenting styles and self-esteem. This analysis helps determine the strength and direction of the relationship between these variables.

Regression Analysis: Excel's regression analysis tool to explore the relationship between parenting styles (independent variable) and self-esteem (dependent variable) while controlling for other relevant variables. This analysis can help identify the specific impact of parenting styles on self-esteem.

6)Possible findings:

Overarching research suggests that young adults who experienced authoritative parenting styles during their upbringing tend to have higher self-esteem. The supportive and warm parenting approach, coupled with clear expectations and autonomy granting, continues to contribute positively to self-esteem in young adulthood.

Impact of other parenting styles (authoritarian and permissive) on self-esteem: Young adults who experienced authoritarian parenting styles may exhibit lower self-esteem compared to those from authoritative backgrounds.

1) Exploring Social Media And It’s Various Moods In Young Adults

2) Studying the effects of social media is important. It helps us to understand how it can be used in a healthy way and avoid negative consequences and mental health problems, especially among young people who rely on it a lot. This study focuses on how social media influences our mood, using a theory called "uses and gratifications." Young adults use different social media platforms for different reasons, such as entertainment, learning, making friends, expressing themselves, or getting emotional support. This study aims to understand how these reasons and other factors influence our mood when using social media.

3) Social media can cause problems for some young adults because it can negatively affect their mental health, make them compare themselves to others, and make them addicted to it. It is important for psychologists to study this to understand how it happens, create ways to help, and give advice. This helps them figure out what things make it more likely for someone to be affected, create ways to help them, and encourage them to use social media responsibly. Psychologists want to improve the mental health and overall happiness of young adults by dealing with these challenges.

4) ”. How do young adults experience different moods in social media use?"

5) Qualitative study, Semi Structured. Participants are recruited from mutual social media connections. Participants are all young adults (18yrs - 25yrs). Collection of data is a 1 to 1 interview between researcher and participants, with a total of 10 questions for them to answer. Answers are analysed with thematic analysis

6) Using social media can be an emotional rollercoaster, with posts and activities affecting our feelings in different ways. Positive content can uplift them, while negative ones can make them sad and other bad moods. The type of content consumed also plays a role, as positive and funny posts improve our mood, while negative content can make us angry or sad. Social media can trigger feelings of envy and dissatisfaction when we see our friends' successes and enjoyable experiences, a lot of them mentioned the term “FOMO”. Interactions and feedback on social media have an impact too, with positive reactions uplifting our mood and negative comments causing frustration. Personality traits can influence our emotional experiences on social media, with emotionally driven individuals reacting strongly to negative posts. Coping strategies like talking to someone about negative posts or taking breaks from social media can help manage negative moods. These themes shed light on how social media affects our emotions, showing both positive and negative aspects.

Topic : More young adults picks up vaping after covid-19 strikes

This topic is chosen as article reports show that more youths started vaping and they have misconceptions about the risk vaping poses. Research done by local university have also suggested that vaping is becoming a social issue. The aim of the research is to find out why young adults choose to vape whether it is due to accessibility or any other contributing factors. It is also to find out if the pandemic is one of the causes that results in them picking up the habit of vaping. Finding out all the contributing factors as well as to work with vape addicts, mainly the young adults, as well as to find out more on the side if vaping does help them feel better psychologically or that if they ‘feel good’ after vaping which turns it into a habit, are aims of this research as well.

This contributes to the subfield of psychology, health psychology. Singapore banned emerging tobacco products like e-cigarettes, smokeless cigars and cigarillos in a pre-emptive measure to protect the public health. Vaping is known to cause a mysterious lung disease known as the ‘popcorn lungs’. Such a condition damages the smallest airways in lungs resulting in cough and shortness of breath. It is caused by breathing in a chemical , Diacetyl, used in flavoured nicotine.

Research Question : What factors influence young adults’ vaping behaviour?

Methodology : Qualitative method.

Sample : Male and female young adults who vapes or used to vape as well as young adults of mixed genders who picked up vaping after the pandemic with a total of 8 participants , 4 of each gender.

Data Collection : Interviews that are conducted online via zoom or video call subjected to participant’s availability lasting around 45-60 minutes.

Data Analysis : Thematic Analysis
6. Possible Findings: Young adults probably pick up vaping due to how easily accessible it is, cigarettes often leave a smell after smoking whereas vaping does not, the packaging of the e-cigarettes and flavours are attractive and they have the misconception that vaping poses lesser harm to smoking cigarettes. To those that picked up vaping after pandemic strikes could be due to, during circuit breaker or work from home, it is easier to vape at home as it does not leave any traces of smell behind than the flavoured scent the e-cigarettes give off.

After this project, we hope that the participants as well as the public, can have a better understanding towards the practice of work-life balance. We also hope that there could be improvements made to working conditions as well as people’s lifestyle, as to make changes in self and wellbeing in everyone. Especially in the context of the pandemic, we hope that such mistakes will be learnt and not repeated again as everyone goes back to the office with the pandemic more or less going away these days.

4) How do employees working-from-home during the COVID-19 pandemic and post-COVID-19 pandemic periods experience and manage work-life balance?

5) 8 participants (4 male and 4 female), Participants can be recruited through researcher’s social media accounts (Twitter, Instagram, Telegram etc.) with posts about asking for participants to be recruited for interviews and rough details of this research project explained. This research is of qualitative design so 8 interviews would be needed to conduct. Interviews will be conducted thru Zoom to suit both researchers and participants timings due to possible potential time constraints from both parties. Interviews will be audio-recorded and safekept with researcher, away from interviewees and the public. Transcripts will be made after the interviews and be attached to be research paper as to analyse data needed for this research project. The following data will be analysed in a form of thematic analysis by Braun & Clarke, 2006.

6) Working individuals have been failing to understand and let alone practice the separation of work from one's personal life. With the pandemic that was happening, it was even harder for these individual working adults to juggle and settle both work and personal life matters peacefully, as expected.

Meaning of friendships

Friendships are a good platform for social support. However, a study by Bhattacharya et al. (2016) showed that young adults tend to lose friends in their mid 20s. This suggests potential problems in terms of the depth of friendship (i.e. Aristotle’s 3 types of friendships), and the choice of letting certain friends go (i.e was the friendship let go because of undesirable qualities, or let go by default due to inability to resolve conflict). Hence this paper aims to find out what young adults think about friendships, what criteria do they base on to commit, and the ideal friendships/potential barriers.

Social support has been heavily researched and known to be correlated with one’s mental health. If losing friends indeed is a common occurrence, future research can look further into why friendships deteriorate and potential interventions.

How do young adults view and experience meaningful friendships?

Qualitative paper. Young adults aged 18-25, recruited through social media, semi-structured interview done through Zoom. Data will be analysed through thematic analysis.

Themes that have been analysed so far: Obligation, reliance on activities, relatability, pleasure focused, acceptance, and conflict avoidance

1) Topic: Parental upbringing and personality development

2) Research aim:

- Identify and spread awareness/empathy on how parental upbringing affects personality development
- Positive and negative early life experiences different individuals may face within their family
- How different experiences alters and shapes our personality throughout our lifespan as we grow
- Identify how conditioning works in shaping personality and behaviors over time with the inclusion of theories on behaviourism and humanistic psychology

3) Justification/Rationale/Contribution

- Throughout an inevitable phase of childhood, every individual comes across different unique experiences be it positive or negative, which could easily affect the way one thinks, perceives, and view things. From a biological approach, the human brain develops the most rapidly at the age of a child, and is most flexible in adjusting to a wide range of environments, interactions, and challenges. Emotional well-being and social competence provide a strong foundation for emerging cognitive abilities, and together they are the bricks and mortar that comprise the foundation of human development. The emotional and physical health, social skills, and cognitive-linguistic capacities that emerge in the early years are all important prerequisites for success in school and later on in the workplace and community. With thus, the rationale behind this paper stays strong to deepen the understanding behind how parental upbringing in specific could affect personality development, the importance of a good upbringing, and the consequences of bad upbringing.

4) Research question
How do people perceive the impacts of parental upbringing on their personality?

5) Methodology

The research will be carried out through qualitative interviews to 8 individuals, where the participants would be prompted to share on their childhood experiences and upbringing, current life experiences, beliefs and personality traits.

- Personality test can be used to better understand participants’ personality accurately (www.16personalities.com) – a widely popular site well known for its accuracy and efficiency

- A set of questions prompted to participants to identify any link between their current personality type and their childhood experience, where they also share on their relationship with their family members, experiences in school within their recollection, and they believe could have been done better

- Data collected will then be analysed through the Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method

6) Possible findings
- Relations between factors such as conservative teaching, independency given, relationships between parents and child , with how it could affect and shape personality

- Introversion/extroversion levels, conscientiousness, neuroticism

- How positive Childhood Experiences (PCE) lay a foundation for optimal childhood development and social connectness despite co-occurring adversities

- How negative early life stressors in childhood, where the brain and body is still highly developing, bring about negative impact to an individual’s physical, psychological, social health in adulthood

- Findings whether early intervention can prevent consequences of adverse/unhealthy personality development

1. How social media impacts an individual’s perception on body image.

2.This topic aims to counter the influence and understand more on how social media has affected the current generation.

3.There are many articles on the influence of body image in the world of social media, most of which such studies have come up with the conclusion that exposure to ideal body image contributes from mild to moderate decrement when it comes to body satisfaction/perception as it does affect a person’s well being. With this research I will be co-relating my findings back to the cognitive and behavioural studies in Psychology as there are many implications and factors affecting an individual's psychological functioning, such as low self esteem and depression.

4.WHAT ARE THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON PERCEPTIONS OF BODY IMAGE IN SINGAPORE?

5.A total of 8 individuals, aged between 17-32, working adults as well as students, will be interviewed using semi structured questions through audio recording. Because my research uses verbal data such as interviews being recorded, the data will need to be transcribed into written form in order to conduct a thematic analysis. I will then come up with a more detailed analysis of it into sub-themes.

6.At the end of this research, I am able to provide my research with a wider range of analytic options, explain the cause and effects, and potentials for the range of things that can be said about to support my data as well as possible helpful solutions to help individuals who are suffering silently.

1. Title: Exploring the relationship between stress and tobacco use among different genders

2. This topic focuses on understanding how stress affects tobacco consumption and how it differs between men and women. It aims to find out if
a. stress is a key factor in tobacco use
b. there is a relationship between levels of stress and tobacco consumption frequency
c. which gender faces more stress and why

3. Contribution: Tobacco use is increasing every year regardless of the many health campaigns that have been introduced into the medical industry. At the same time, the number of men smoking in comparison to women is also getting smaller. At the same time, feeling stressed is becoming more rampant and intense due to many reasons such as financial issues or familial problems. Seeing that both stress and tobacco use are increasing steadily over the past few years, it is important to find out how strong the correlation between them is and the role gender plays in all of it. Doing a study that involves comparisons between genders allows for better treatment plans by hitting those specific perceptions and beliefs held towards them.

4. RQ: How does stress influence tobacco use among men and women respectively?

5. Methodology: This is a qualitative study as the study requires a deeper and more insightful understanding towards the factors affecting tobacco consumption and the stressors they face. Conducted 45-60 minutes of semi-structured interview with 10 participants - 5 males and 5 females. All were aged 25-30 years old and were either working full-time or university students. Chose semi-structured interviews as they allow for organic conversations to happen while having structure and flow. All interviews were audio-recorded and all participants were given consent forms as a confirmation of their participation. I recruited my participants from online platforms such as Instagram or Telegram and did the interviews at quiet places such as cafes or libraries. Since I will be using thematic analysis to understand the results, the audio-recordings will be transcribed to make the analysis easier. Thematic analysis will be used to break-down and provide explanations for certain findings

6. Possible Findings: (have not finished analysing yet) At the end of my paper I will explain certain finding use my thematic analysis to provide a better understanding of the relationship between stress and smoking
