They never were able to show or express their identity and culture. When grandfather's cherry blossom tree got cut down he got sick right after and died. In the book it states “Captain Narita stared at my grandfather for a long time and, looking at Mother’s pale face, he said, “When will you stupid Koreans understand that you are our subjects and there is nothing we, the Imperial police of the Heavenly race, do not know about your activities. There is nothing we cannot do. If you value this old man’s life, you’d better remember that you are our subjects.” (Page 27) This evidence shows that the Japanese would talk to the Korean in any type of way and made them their slaves in a way.

My family is Jamaican and we express that every day through our food, personality, etc. My mom for example speaks Patios every day and always is making different Jamaican food dishes. Them not being able to be themselves do cause some people to be depressed or unhappy. I believe that even when some people tell teachers they tend not to do nothing and go the whole year begin bullied for being themselves. Many black people weren't able to be free, be themselves, show their culture, etc. There were a lot of segercations that happened, and many black people would get hit for standing up for what is right. I believe that this changed their mood a lot and sometimes thought they would never be free. Also, many women were oppressed and men didn't want them to have the spotlight. In “Expansion & Reform: Black Women and the Abolition of Slavery” article it states “Black men in these anti-slavery groups wanted Black women to work behind the scenes. But many refused to do so. In 1831, Black women in Boston organized the African American Female Intelligence Society. One woman in the group was Maria Stewart. She was the first woman to speak publicly against slavery. Stewart said that she was called by God to fight for freedom and the rights of Black women. However, Boston's Black male community censored Stewart for her speeches and forced her into silence. She never again spoke publicly, but she remained active in women's groups.” This evidence shows how even sometimes women weren't able to shine in or spotlight because of their gender, and any woman might have felt that they were begin used.
