The pager became the most popular device while Rita attended middle school. Although not all students had one, it was used to communicate with other students. These pagers could send and receive short messages. For instance, hello, let's eat together or how are you? At this grade level, the students were now allowed to use calculators during class. Rita stated it made math much easier, being able to revise her work.

At Maria's high school, all the classrooms now had the modern overhead as well as the smartboard. Educators also had a thin overhead by their desks. This was controlled by a control remote, to demonstrate what they wrote on their paper. Educators would go through a lesson with a PowerPoint. They would play videos and write on the smartboard. Unlike in elementary school where you had to go to the library to research, educators had the ability to reserve the laptops for the class period. Maria additionally states they would occasionally take tests on the library computers.
