I have so many things I would like to say but then this would turn into a short novel. So, I’ll just say something that I have always appreciated about you.

In the time I have known you, you have always given off this certain energy. It’s not just your bubbly personality or your big cheesy chin that people know and love you for. Whilst they are delightful, the energy I noticed isn’t something you can physically see. It’s radiates around you and draws people in like a big bear hug.

Even when life is shitty you are always trying to give love to the world and I appreciate that about you.

It was never my plan to live with a little baby when i was just 21, but as far as I recall - we thoroughly charmed each other!

I was known as Johnny then, and you would frequently shout out "Jojjy" to greet me, or find out where i was in the house!

I remember being envious of the gorgeous way you were raised in that first year. The wide range of people you met, the environments you encountered, and the love that was showered on you by so many! oh and the fun you had finger-painting in hummus on the glass partitions at the Civic Hotel!

I learnt how to eat (and love) olives because of you! And I'm thankful for the joy and wamth and laughter you brought into my world that year. Thank you dear young man, and happy birthday. I wish you joy and warmth and laughter in return.

When I first met you, you changed my perspective on the world, but you didn’t know. You were just a baby and I was 21 years old. Some people speculate that the life we live between 21 and 28 is in some ways a review of the 7 years before that, like 21 is a fulcrum in the time of your life and then you travel Benjamin Button style, without the becoming cute as a button again. This means that you need to walk back through whatever you and others create to get to your source. That can be a hard road and when I got to 21 I hadn’t thought that life had necessarily dealt me the best hand in some respects, but I was about to experience some of the most wonderful (you, Erin, Ella and Declan being born) and the absolute worst (Amy) experiences of my life. You’ve had to walk a narrow road and, like many of us, fallen by the wayside sometimes and then found your way to today. Today you’re 28 and that’s bloody fantastic, but I want to be celebrating you when you’re talking to my grandchildren (as yet unborn) as they are turning 28 and reflecting on their lives.

But for today, today is enough. My life and this world are more golden with you in them. You are a champion mate! With more love than can be put in words,

When I first met you, my whole perspective on life changed, but you didn’t know as you were just a baby.  I was just 21 and about to embark on the 7 year adventure through to 28 that you have just experienced and largely endured.  It’s an ominous age in popular culture but some also speculate that between 21 and 28 you have a mildly Benjamin Button like experience of living backwards through the what you and others have left in the previous years.  It can be a very trying time, but that is often what makes it rewarding in the end.  When I turned 21 I had no idea of the next few years to come; the joys that I would experience in you, Erin, Ella and Declan being born and the great sorrow I would feel when Amy died.  You have lived a life walking at times on a narrow road and like many of us, have gone by the wayside and made it back.  It is so wonderful that you have arrived at today, but I also want to celebrate you as your talking to my as yet unborn grandchildren when they’ve are turning 28.  I might be a bit past it by then, but we’ll see.

My life and this world are more golden with you in them Ethan.  You are a champion and I hope for you so many more birthday celebrations and wonderful years in between them.

We've had a bunch of good times, but what springs to mind are all those rides home you and Emma gave me from the Charlie rehearsals in 2022.

I was still finding my place in the theatre company, and you were the only person I knew, and for that five minute ride you and me and Emma would joke and laugh and all the pressure of everything would disappear. You made me feel welcome in a place I so desperately wanted to belong, and I was so grateful to you for that, for giving me a space to be myself.

We've had lots of laughs, and done some real cool stuff together since then, but that's the Ethan I always think of, the one who doesn't hesitate to include somebody and make them feel good about themselves.

The first time we meet was when you came to my house as a plus one with Emma and you were the few people that stuck around and played board games with Dec and I! Not only have board games been involved in all our interactions together but it also happened to be one of our favourite things to do so we were already off to a great start.

You are such a ray to be around and I'm glad I met someone that can yap as much as me and create such a comfortable space to talk freely about anything!
