1. What role card did you have?
I had attack strategies.

2. When did you use your role card? Why did you choose to do so at this time?
Whenever someone set up the ball for me or the ball came to me, I would attempt to use my role card.

3. Was the feedback / strategy / pep talk / suggestion that you gave an effective or ineffective outcome? Why?
I told my teammates to try to aim for open spaces and pass the ball if they need help. This worked sometimes, but it was hard to think fast with a ball coming toward you.

4. What would / could you do differently next time?

Next time I could try to move around more and call out any moves I'm going to make to communicate better.

Defensive Coach:
I tried to protect the frisbee and stay at the back of the court to block the attackers. My team worked pretty well, but this is a new sport for a lot of us, so we did struggle trying to throw not to mention how windy the weather was.

Team reflection - ultimate frisbee

1. As a team, discuss your strengths and challenges as a team. How will you overcome these in the next game?
As a team, we could consider strategy formation and tactics as our strengths. This is because of our experience in our volleyball unit. After working with our peers in different teams, we were able to gauge which tactics or strategies worked for different skill levels and how to execute them in a way that complimented our players’ strengths.

Our weaknesses are our lack of knowledge (in regards to Ultimate Frisbee), our communication skills and our unfamiliar group dynamics. As a group, many of us haven’t had the chance to work together so this means that there is unfamiliarity and a lack of chemistry within our team. We hope to remedy this by learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses so we can better understand each other and how the others play. As for our lack of knowledge, we hope to remedy this by researching Ultimate Frisbee and grasping the key concepts of the game. This way, during game time, we have a clear understanding of the inner workings of the game. Finally, communication should come hand in hand with our group dynamic, because once we are comfortable in this group dynamic, we should all feel more comfortable speaking with each other and collaborating.

2. Look at who you are playing in round 2. What are their strengths and challenges? What can you do in your next game against them?
NA (This portion of the reflection was written post-game)

3. Rate and discuss how effectively you are working together as a team. What are your next steps as a team for improved group dynamics?
We rate how effective we work together an 8/10 because we communicated with each other to score goals and we also were confident in our passes. The next steps as a team for improved group dynamics would be to use short passes instead of carelessly throwing the frisbee and hoping someone is there to catch it. Next round we could also have a group discussion before playing to find what suits our group best in order to reach our personal best and score more goals.

Personal reflection - ultimate frisbee

1. What is your role and your responsibilities?
My role is the defensive coach, and my responsibility is to give my team advice for defending, and to defend during the game.

2. What type of leadership does your role require? What are your strengths and areas of growth for enacting this type of leadership?
The leadership my role requires is giving my group feedback and tips for defending. I need to improve my communication skills.

3. What strategy have you tried whilst working through your role? What has been the impact of this strategy (positive / negative). What will you try next? Why?
I’ve tried to guard any incoming players, and if the disc came my way I would attempt to catch it and throw it to a teammate down the court. This was at times effective, but with my very low skills at actually playing frisbee, I struggled. I will try to move around more next time so I can be faster when the frisbee comes my way.

4. How does your leadership (role, responsibilities, strengths and challenges) affect your groups dynamics? How can you positively impact the group?
My leadership role affects my group's dynamics because it gives them a sense of what to do when it comes to defending the court. I can positively impact the group by giving positive feedback.

5. What do I need to improve on in regards to my role as a player in the team? What impact is this likely to have on my teammates and the dynamics of the group?
I need to improve on calling out and moving around more. This will make my team feel more comfortable to throw the frisbee to me, or to move to catch my throw.

I learned what myself and others on my table already knew about respectful relationships and sexual health. We also talked about what sexual health actually is, so I learned about that. We then watched 1 and a half videos of consent and safety. The first video covered many topics, such as underage drinking, consent, communication and feeling safe. From what we had watched of the second video, it covered power in relationships, and how people can abuse it or not have any.

Background information/introduction

power is the ability of one person to exert control and influence within a relationship or group. Power dynamics in a relationship refer to the different ways p artners can behave to influence each other.

Negative and positive power in a relationship

Negative: This is when there is an imbalance or abuse of one another in the relationship, this usually includes taking advantage of the partner. Verbally stating negative aspects of one another to put the partner down. Being controlling or isolating yourself.

Being positive in a power relationship includes both partners knowing their value, they listen to each other and make changes based on feelings and interests of the other. Even if there is a disagreement, partners will respect each other. When there is miscommunication, the partners talk to each other to solve the issue.

Unsafe/unhealthy behaviours related to the topic

Power dynamics in a relationship refer to the different ways partners can behave to influence each other. There are three types of relationship dynamics that can result from negative power imbalances within the relationship: demand-withdrawal, distancer-pursuer, and fear-shame.

Demand-withdrawl is when one partner is the demander, seeking change, discussion, or resolution of an issue, while the other partner is the withdrawer, seeking to end or avoid discussion of the issue.

Distance-pursuer is when the pursuer is the partner in the relationship that wants to resolve conflict right away by immediately seeking an audience with their partner. The distancer is usually the partner who needs some space to process and feel safe before resolving a conflict.

Fear-shame is when a relationship has these two things. Fear makes you want to believe in someone, and shame makes you need to have someone believe in you.

Proactive strategies to support healthy and safe behaviours

How to prevent a power imbalance in a relationship

Communication is one of the most effective tools to negotiate the balance of power in relationships. It's also a founding pillar that maintains the relationship healthy and strong, allowing both partners to connect and understand each other on an intimate level.
