Questions

What excited you about working with technology this week?

What challenged you about working with technology this week?

What intrigued you from your disciplinary perspective (acting, dancing, theatre making) about working with technology?

What questions do you have?

I was really excited to get working with the isadora software because I know that it was created for dance, and dancers. Thus, I was excited to see how I could use isadora to work with space and movement. I have never used such software before. I wanted to use isadora to program and track my movements, and perhaps layer it with music.

It was challenging to work with graphics and developing backgrounds for each scene. I found it difficult to figure out what graphic worked best for each scene because there were many to choose from, and also was very technical to apply. We had to juggle using the room light and space to see how clear the graphics look on screen too. Those were challenging.

As a dancer it was really interesting to see how we can use isadora to map our bodies onstage. The use of focus and different effects to create a different atmosphere while moving was incredible. It was also really fun to work with the camcorder to chart my movements and have isadora edit the scenes to tailor how I want the aesthetic to be.

I wonder if I can use more music , or add layers of music to isadora. I have questions about how to use the effect of making videos go upside down and slanted. I would also like to ask questions about how to get colour effects for scenes, like how Sasha’s group used it.

Questions

1. Describe in 1-2 sentences a description of your specific project.

2. What did you find most exciting about working with the technology this week?

3. What did you find most challenging about working with the technology this week?

4. What new perspectives about Acting/Dancing/Directing/Theatre-making did you gain this week?

5.What questions are you left with?

1. My group’s project was to create a 5 minute work using Isadora, the software, as well as selected text from Samuel Beckett’s plays. With the text received, my group decided to create a work surrounding ethereal beings and friendship.

2. I found it really interesting to explore using Isadora to projection map. We tried out mapping outfits onto mannequins and getting to the precise shape of the figure. Then, we explored bringing the projections up to the wall and mapping it around different blocks and shapes.

3. I found it challenging to figure out how to make the projections as accurate to the shape i wanted. It took me a really long time to figure out which controls to use to get the correct angle.

4. From the directing perspective, i gained a new realisation that angles of projection don’t only affect light technicians but audiences as well. It is important to ensure that when using projection, audiences can see our projections from their seats. Often when my group trial ran the projections we had, the projections were not easily seen from audience seats as they were either too small or out of view. Thus, I learnt that we need to be as accurate as possible when utilising technology, so that audiences can enjoy our work from where they’re seated to the fullest.

5. I wonder if i can use GIFs in Isadora and projection map them onto walls or objects.

Questions

1) My group decided to use ChatGPT to create a script that revolved two female lovers falling out of love. We also decided to utilise sound technology to make the script more audibly poignant.

2) I found it really interesting to learn about how to operate a sound mixer. Admittedly I have never used one before. It was a bit confusing to understand which switch to use, but i got the hang of it after a while. I also found it really interesting to learn how to use a bypass for reverb. We experimented on using the bypass, delay and pitch shift altogether and it was really fun.

3) I found it really most challenging to understand how the wires connected each tool to make a system work. For example, I could not figure out which wire would go where for output and input, which affected my group mates as i would plug them in wrongly. I did get it in due course, but it was admittedly a bit frustrating and challenging.

4) I feel that as a theatre-maker, I gained new perspectives of working with challenging people. I had been grouped with a classmate (Joe) who would be constantly focusing on doing his own thing, as well as interrupting me when i was suggesting ideas. He also insisted on bringing his own mixer when the task was to use the audio tools placed for us. It took a lot of patience to work with him because he is experienced in mixing and audio, and wanted to run everything. As a theatre-maker i understand that we will come across many different types of people in the industry, and so i have gained more perspective on how to work with people on different wavelengths.
Work wise, I have definitely gained perspective on how to use a mixer and sound tools for my pieces in the future and will definitely explore more.

5) I don’t have questions as i need time to digest what I have learnt today, but I do wonder if there is a maximum distortion that we have not reached in audios yet.

What did you find most challenging about working with the technology this week?

4. What new perspectives about Acting/Dancing/Directing/Theatre-making did you gain this week?

5.What questions are you left with?

1. My group’s project is about a teenager’s interaction with a friendly ghost , and their introduction to ghosts around the world. We used ChatGPT to generate a script and played around with Adobe Audition to mix and layer sounds.

2. I found it super exciting to work on Adobe Audition. It was my first time to work on this software, and i thoroughly enjoyed recording sounds, amplifying and creating tracks. I found it really fun to learn about isolating tracks to make them heard more clearly,as well as trying out the mixer to bring volumes up and down.

3. I found it a little challenging to multi-task creating live audio and keeping up with the Qlab cues. I learnt a lot about how to use Qlab to accurately time sounds coming up onstage, but I also found it challenging to manage sound levels of each Qlab audio as we planned different sound levels per audio. I did my best to make my live audios (book sounds, breath and tapping) audible and keep up with timing Qlab audios.

4. A new perspective i gained on directing is that I can utilise my directing through sound. I planned sounds that would fit the piece best, and realised that the actors actually responded to the sounds through variations of voice and mood. Indirectly, the sounds i chose guided the actors through the piece.

5. I wonder if i can smoothly transition from different filters on the pedals without having a gap of space in between. I wonder if changing voice filters are also available on Qlab and Adobe Audition. I will give that a try next time!
