Sugar daddies are rich and typically older men who buy gifts or give money to a younger person, typically a women. So that the younger woman will spend time with him and have a sexual relationship with him. While it is not necessarily illegal or harmful to others, this behavior is considered deviant because it challenges traditional expectation and norms regarding age and relationships. Society expects romantic relationship to be based on emotional connection and mutual attraction, rather than money and materialistic attraction. This topic is worth studying because sugar daddy relationships raise questions concerning power dynamics, consent and social norms. While some may view sugar daddy relationships as a legitimate lifestyle choice, other may view it as problematic and sometimes abusive. Further exploration of the attitudes and beliefs surrounding sugar daddy relationships can provide insight into the broader issues related to gender, power and sexuality. As well as what motivates the younger person in the relationship to want to be in a relationship based off of money and not romance.

A sugar daddy would fall under the category of behavior in Alder and Alder's ABC's, as it involves a specific action or set of actions taken by these older men in pursuit of a particular goal or outcome. The action that a sugar daddy partakes in is providing financial or material support to a younger partner in exchange for companionship and/or a sexual relationship. The decision to become a sugar daddy involves a cognizant decision to participate in a non-traditional form of relationship, which can be influenced by different social and psychological factors.

A sugar daddy would fall into the selection category of Alder & Alder's Three S's, which described how individuals choose and are chosen for deviant behavior. The selection category focuses on the factors that influence an individual's decision to engage in deviant behavior. The selection process involves a conscious decision to engage in a non-traditional form of relationship with a younger woman in exchange for monetary support.

Depending on the social and cultural setting, I believe that the consequences of this deviance on society can be both positive and negative. On the positive side, sugar dating can lead to economic stimulus, female empowerment, and a challenge to traditional gender roles. On the negative side, sugar dating can lead to exploitation, the reinforcement of societal inequalities, and the normalization of transactional relationships. The way society has reacted to the deviant behavior of sugar daddies has changed over time and differs depending on the cultural setting. Generally, legal regulation, stigmatization, pop-culture representation, and technology have all been altered as a reaction to this behavior.

Deviant View of Their Behavior

The views of sugar daddies towards their own behavior can vary depending on individual circumstances, personal values, and social contexts. For some sugar daddies, engaging in sugar dating may be viewed as a way to explore their sexuality, to fulfill unmet needs, or to experience the excitement of being in a power dynamic with a younger partner. In these cases, sugar dating may be seen as a temporary or occasional deviation from their usual behavior or relationships. However, for others, sugar dating may be viewed as a more permanent or consistent aspect of their lives. These individuals may see themselves as having a preference for younger partners or for the power dynamic that comes with being a sugar daddy.

Deviant behavior can also be assessed using additional conceptualizations, such as normative/positivist, social constructionist/relativist, and critical perspectives. Being a sugar daddy may be seen as deviant behavior on a large scale from a normative/positivist perspective when it differs from the normative standards of a romantic relationship, which are frequently oriented on reciprocal love and emotional connection rather than money exchange. The critical point of view, on the other hand, asserts that being a sugar daddy might be seen as a sort of deviant behavior that, on a broader scale, embodies the more significant injustices and power imbalances prevalent in society. According to a social constructionist or relativist viewpoint at the micro level, the particular social and cultural context of the relationship determines whether or not being a sugar daddy is viewed as deviant.

From the perspective of Goffman and his ideas, the deviance of being a sugar daddy is a blemish of individual character. This is because it is based on perceived moral failings or character flaws in the deviant individual.

This deviance is discreditable due to the fact that the stigma may not be visible to others but can be revealed if the sugar daddy's relationship with their younger partner becomes public or is disclosed.

Goffman’s idea of a “moral career”, which refers to the process by which individuals develop and internalize moral values over time, can be applied to sugar daddies as well. This may be influenced by factors such as wealth, power, and status, as well as personal experiences and cultural factors. The sugar daddy may therefore view their relationship with a younger partner as morally acceptable, while others may see it as deviant or immoral.

Goffman also discussed the concept of civil places and back places as two environments in which a deviant individual can find themselves. Sugar daddies may engage in different behaviors in civil places versus back places with their younger partners. For instance, in civil places, they may hide their relationship or pretend to be "just friends," while in back places, they may engage in more intimate behavior.

Academic Research

There are several academic scholars who have discussed deviant behavior in the context of Goffman's ideas and the three conceptualizations of deviance. For example, in her book "The Professor Is In: The Essential Guide To Turning Your Ph.D. Into a Job", Karen Kelsky applied Goffman’s concept of "moral career" to the study of the academic job market. Another scholar who has discussed deviant behavior is Thomas Scheff, who applied the social constructionist perspective to analyze deviance and stigma in his book "Being Mentally Ill: A Sociological Theory". While academic research directly related to the deviance of being a sugar daddy is lacking, these ideas of social stigmatization and the construction of deviant behavior can be applied to this deviant behavior, which challenges traditional norms of romantic relationships and may be perceived as a blemish on one's moral career. Consequently, there is substantial evidence supporting the assumption that Goffman's conceptions and the many conceptualizations of deviant behavior may be applied to the deviance, even though there may be some variety in how much each researcher agrees with my assertions individually.
